The post Rain ends ODI series 1-1 appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

rainPersistent heavy rain forced the abandonment of the decisive third One-Day International between West Indies and Afghanistan here Wednesday night, leaving the three-match series in a 1-1 stalemate.

The adverse weather, which started overnight and continued all day, refused to relent for any significant length of time, leaving the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground under water and play was eventually called off at 7:12 p.m.

With the original start time of 2:30 p.m. delayed by 2-1/4 hours, the game was reduced to 43 overs per side when the weather finally eased somewhat late in the evening and officials managed to get the toss spun.

Afghanistan called correctly and opted to bat but the revised start time of 4:45 p.m. never came to fruition as the rains returned to ruin any chance of play.

The washout summed up the Windies’ fortunes in the series as they failed to really assert their dominance over the ICC Associate nation.

They crashed to a humbling 63-run defeat in the opening ODI last Friday and then laboured to overhaul 136 for victory in the second game before winning by four wickets.

West Indies’ performance in the series saw them drop two ratings points to fall to 77 in the ICC one-day rankings, further hampering their chances of automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup.

They will now turn their attention to India who arrive in the Caribbean for a five-match ODI series from June 23 to July 6, following their participation in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.

4-samuels-customLONDON, UK – West Indies’ chances of an earning automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup took another damaging blow when they dropped two rating points in the latest ICC One-Day International rankings released on Tuesday.

The Caribbean side dropped from 79 points to 77 following their stunning 63-run defeat to minnows Afghanistan last Friday, in the opening ODI of the ongoing three-match series currently locked at 1-1.

Even if West Indies win Wednesday’s decider at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia, they will gain only one point, with ODI series remaining against powerhouses India later this month and England in September.

Hosts England, along with the next top seven-ranked sides in the world, will earn automatic qualification for the World Cup, with the remaining sides entering a qualifying tournament to determine the last two available berths.

West Indies are currently ranked number nine and to add insult to injury, number eight-ranked Pakistan have gained three points to move to 91, following victories over the highly-ranked South Africa and Sri Lanka in the ongoing Champions Trophy in England.

Pakistan’s lead over West Indies is now 14 points leaving the former World champions with a huge gap to make up by the World Cup qualification cutoff date of September 30.

The embattled Windies are expected to face a stern challenge when they take on India from June 23 to July 6 in a five-match series in the Caribbean.

They also travel to England for a similar five-match series from September 19-29.

Top-ranked South Africa, meanwhile, dropped three points but remained in pole position while Australia and India continued second and third respectively.

England have gained two points and moved into fourth place, overtaking New Zealand who dropped three points into fifth.

The post WORLD: Pakistanis rejoice after team hammers India in Champion’s Trophy appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

2017-06-19-08_11_04-pakistanis-rejoice-after-team-hammers-india-in-champions-trophyISLAMABAD, Pakistan – The streets of Pakistan’s cities lit up with celebrations Sunday night after the country’s cricket team defied the odds to thrash rival India in the Champion’s Trophy final in London.

The upset, which saw Pakistan win by a record margin in the final of a global event, came after they had been on the receiving end of a hammering by India in the tournament opener and were written off by fans and pundits alike.

It was watched by hundreds of millions of fans globally, possibly a billion, and brought normal life to a standstill across much of the sub-continent.

But when bowler of the tournament Hasan Ali picked up the final wicket of Jasprit Bumrah to put the Indian tail out of its misery for just 158 runs — 180 shy of Pakistan’s mammoth 338, celebratory gunfire erupted in neighbourhoods up and down the country.

“Wow wow wow unbelievable performance by team green. It feels like deja’vu after winning the 1992 WCup. I am over the moon #PakistanZinabadad”, tweeted ex fast-bowler Wasim Akram, who also compared fast-bowler Mohammad Amir’s masterclass in high-swing bowling to his own during his 1990s heydey.

People poured into bazaars and markets in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad to celebrate the win by blaring patriotic pop songs, as youths performed wheelies on motorcycles and waved flags as they dangled out of cars.

The win came as mainly Muslim Pakistan prepares for Eid after the fasting month of Ramadan — though for many fans, the festival had already arrived.

“I’m so happy. Eid came early for Pakistanis this year!”, tweeted user Berry Aneurysm.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif meanwhile issued a statement congratulating the team, saying they “deserve the nation’s profound gratitude and appreciation”.

A matchup between the two sides is seen as the world’s premier cricket contest, despite the fact in recent years the outcome has generally been one-sided in India’s favour — particularly in knockout tournaments.

That jinx, however, now stands emphatically broken, with the magnitude of the victory surprising even to diehard fans more used to a team that conjures defeats from favourable positions.

Amid the general exultation, praise was reserved for India skipper Virat Kohli who showed grace in defeat during the post-match presser.

“Virat Kohli is truly a credit to his team and nation, a generous and honest sporting spirit,” wrote radio host Fasi Zaka.

Pakistan piled up 338 for four in the final, with Fakhar Zaman making a dashing 114 — the left-handed opener’s maiden hundred in just his fourth match at this level since a debut in Pakistan’s group-stage win over South Africa.

Mohammad Amir then reduced India to 33 for three by dismissing all the members of the title-holders’ top three, with Rohit Sharma out for a duck and opposing skipper Virat Kohli, the world’s leading ODI batsman, falling for just five.

There was no way back for India, who collapsed to 158 all out with nearly 20 overs of the match as they suffered their heaviest defeat by runs in 129 ODIs against Pakistan.

The post REGIONAL: Brian Lara Stadium to host CPL finals appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

S

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The newly opend Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad will host the finals of the 2017 Caribbean Premier League in September, organisers confirmed yesterday.

Four games comprising three play-offs and the grand final will be played at the 15,000-seat venue in south Trinidad from September 5-9.

The stadium, named after aruguably the greatest batsman of the contemporary era, opened last month and the CPL finals marks the first major event to be held there.

“We are absolutely delighted to be bringing the Hero CPL finals to Trinidad & Tobago. There is nowhere that can host the CPL finals quite like Trinidad & Tobago,” said CPL’s chief executive Damien O’Donohoe.

“CPL is without doubt the biggest sports event in the Caribbean and has attracted huge international attention so this is a great opportunity for Trinidad & Tobago to showcase everything that makes this country so special to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.

“Sports tourism is now creating lots of much needed jobs in the region and so Trinidad and Tobago are set to really benefit from hosting these games.”

The stadium is run by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago, an arm of the Ministry of Sports here, and was only recently completed following years of delays.

Originally scheduled to host warm-up matches during the 2007 Cricket World Cup, the construction was plagued with controversy and cost overruns and eventually stalled.

Building resumed last year and the structure was finally completed earlier this year.

Sports Minister Darryl Smith said the venue would do justice to the CPL finals.

“What better tribute could we ask for the Academy’s namesake and the cricket-loving citizens of Trinidad & Tobago?” he said.

“The CPL has become a true spectacle for the game and is enjoyed by cricket lovers across the Caribbean and the world. When the CPL officials visited last month and discussions began, I was quietly confident.

“We will ensure that it will be one of the best finals in the tournament’s history.”

The stadium hosted a domestic Twenty20 tournament recently to mark its opening.

The CPL, in its fifth year, is set to run from August 4 to September 9.

windieswomenLONDON, England – West Indies Women will be vying for a winner’s cheque of US$660,000 when they open their campaign in the ICC Women’s World Cup which bowls off Saturday.

The top prize is part of an overall tournament bounty of $2 million which, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC), is 10 times the amount on offer at the last World Cup in India four years ago.

The losing finalists will walk away with a handy $330,000, with the losing semi-finalists each pocketing $165,000.

Teams bowing out at the group stage will still collect $30,000 each with each preliminary round win rewarded with $20,000.

West Indies Women enter the June 24 to July 23 tournament as one of the favourites following their capture of last year’s Twenty20 World Cup in India.

They have also excelled in the 50-overs format, reaching the final of the 2013 World Cup and also finishing fourth in the ICC Championship last year to be one of four teams to earn automatic qualification for the pending tournament.

The Caribbean side has had a rough last three weeks, however, losing all their unofficial warm-up games.

They play their first official ICC warm-up against Pakistan in Leicester today before taking on South Africa in their final warm-up in Oakham.

West Indies open their preliminary campaign with a rematch of the 2013 final against reigning champions Australia in Taunton.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) boss Dave Cameron says senior West Indies players need to come to terms with the reality of their performance-based requirements, stressing that experience alone would no longer count in the issuing of central retainer contracts.

Speaking against the backdrop of the furore arising from Darren Bravo’s rejection of a Grade C contract last year, Cameron argued that Windies players now controlled their own futures as once they perform, they, and not CWI, dictated the quality of contract they received.

Cameron also contended that seasoned players need to translate that experience into performances instead of hoping for a high level retainer based on their length of time in international cricket.

Two-time Twenty20 World Cup-winning captain Darren Dammy has blasted Cricket West Indies for the continued decline of the international side, and has painted a bleak future for the team once the Dave Cameron-led administration remains in charge.

In a sharp critique of the state of West Indies cricket, the all-rounder told the Tuffers and Vaughan Show that he could not envision an immediate turnaround for West Indies, especially since none of the leading players was ever likely to represent the region again because of CWI’s policies.

“I am very scared [for the future of West Indies cricket]. For a team that has dominated cricket for 17 years during the period in the 80s and the early 90s, to be in that position right now,” Sammy said.

“I am scared that we might be relegated to the [league of the] Irelands and Scotlands, playing against these guys which is very, very sad – if something doesn’t change and at the moment, the guy has just been re-elected for another term. I can’t see it happening. It’s very sad for us.”

West Indies once dominated world cricket but have languished in the nether regions of the ICC Test rankings for years now and are currently eighth, only above Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Two-time former 50-over World Cup champions, the Windies are now ranked ninth, a position which resulted in their omission from the just concluded Champions Trophy in England.

And despite winning the T20 World Cup last year in India under Sammy, the Caribbean side have since won just five of their last 12 matches to slip to fifth in the rankings.

“The rankings will show you, even in all three formats. We’ve managed to even go down in T20 as well. It’s sad talking about it,” the St Lucian lamented.

“Look at the Champions Trophy, we weren’t even there and we have to play against the likes of Afghanistan – no disrepect – and Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh have leapfrogged us. It’s a sad state in our cricket right now.”

West Indies cricket has found itself crippled by CWI’s insistence on the controversial eligibility rule, which has resulted in marquee players being sidelined. In order to represent the Windies in a format, players need to make themselves available to play in the requisite domestic league.

However, many of the leading Windies players ply their trade in the respective global T20 leagues, and have often opted to forego domestic commitments in favour of more lucrative contracts.

Sammy contended CWI needed to make adjustments to their policies in order to ensure the best players were available for selection but said seemed not to understand what was in the best interests of West Indies cricket.

“With the current administration I don’t see [the top players playing again]. You look at the likes of (Kieron) Pollard, (Dwayne) Bravo, (Chis) Gayle, (Andre) Russell – who is on ban – myself, Marlon Samuels now, Lendl Simmons, these are quality players,” Sammy pointed out.

He added: “Personally I have not played since the World Cup. We know they all try and say it’s because of my place as a cricketer but we all know – the world knows – it’s because of what I said after winning the World Cup and that has been the problem with the administrators of the WICB.

“I think as a leader and as a player, I still have a lot to offer, especially in the limited overs format. At the moment we have guys in administration who don’t really have West Indies cricket at heart and if you really have West Indies cricket at heart, you’ll have the right players for all the formats.

“These are talented cricketers. We can’t afford not to have them in West Indies cricket.”

The 33-year-old Sammy played 38 Tests, 126 ODIs and 66 T20 Internationals, and led West Indies to T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016.

He argued that both players and CWI needed to dialogue on the way forward in order to lead West Indies out of their present predicament.

“I am not blaming the administration [entirely] because … we have some players who have some big egos as well but there must be a way for the players and the administration to get together and focus on West Indies cricket which is supposed to be the most important thing,” he said.

“At the moment I don’t see that happening.”

wipa_logo_400x400KINGSTON, Jamaica – The launch of the 5th Annual CWI/WIPA Players’ Awards, was held this morning at the Indies Players’ Association’s (WIPA) office at Sabina Park, Kingston.

President and CEO of WIPA, Mr. Wavell Hinds and Secretary of WIPA, Mr. Wayne Lewis were present to announce the staging of the event.

CWI and WIPA have jointly decided to host the awards ceremony on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Jamaica Pegasus in New Kingston. A total of eighteen (18) awards will be presented to players, including the new ‘CWI/WIPA Outstanding Foundation’ award. The purpose of this new category is to recognize the work of cricketers that have dedicated their time and efforts to charitable causes while off the field.

WIPA secretary Wayne Lewis, at the briefing, announced that NFL reporter, Steve Wyche, will be the guest speaker for this year’s event. Wyche is a renowned reporter/host/analyst on the NFL Network.

CWI and WIPA will be honouring the achievements of cricketers that have excelled in regional and international cricket from the last 18 months. Mr Hinds stated “The Awards is a highly-anticipated event that is all about our Windies cricketers, as we celebrate their remarkable achievements. We aim to inspire players and to demonstrate to them that their efforts, commitment and dedication will be recognized by the cricketing fraternity.”

Mr. Dave Cameron, President of Cricket Windies, sent his remarks “We know our athletes are under tremendous pressure to perform at the highest level, but national and regional representation remains critical toward a more consistent international performance. The act of recognizing these efforts, should serve as an incentive to the players, teams and officials in making the Cricket Product more meaningful to us as fans and supporters of the game of the cricket.”

Of the eighteen (18) awards, CWI and WIPA will also each present Lifetime Achievement Awards to persons who have served Windies cricket on and off the field.

Quotes from Courtney Browne, CWI Chairman Of Selectors, on the two new players: Sunil Ambris and Kyle Hope are two very promising young batsmen who have been selected on the basis of strong performances in our competitions.

Kyle opened on our last “A” Team One-Day tour to Sri Lanka and had some very good performances. In addition, he also had a good showing opening the batting for the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force franchise in this year’s PCL competition.

Sunil did well in our Regional Super50 One-Day tournament and also had a good showing in this year’s PCL first-class tournament for Windward Islands Volcanoes and therefore will fit within our middle order. They will be up against a good Indian team and they have an opportunity to show their skills and contribute to a stronger team performance.
