The post PRESS RELEASE: Trevor Daniel FDP presents Football Fiesta 2017 appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

unnamedLights Camera Action!!! On Saturday June 10th Curtains go up as the Flow – Trevor Daniel Football Development Programme presents “FOOTBALL FIESTA 2017”.

Once again the Sab(Vigie) playing field will become a center stage to what is promising to be an extravaganza. Youth from 4 to 19 years will showcase their skills, talents, abilities, passion and most importantly LOVE for the game.

Last year the event featured almost 250 children from 19 schools, this year organizers anticipate that number will increase by 100 (or more) now that the programme engages youth from 26 schools.

The event is open to any child; who loves football, who is not sure if they like football yet or any child who just wants to try for the first time.

The event will take place June 10th & 11th preliminary rounds, & the championship matches will play on June 18th. Registration is 830-855am and matches start promptly at 9.

Interested kids who sign up will be pooled according to age and randomly divided into teams(4, 5 or 6 teams per category, depending on total sign-ups). Age categories are U6 – 4 & 5 years, U8 – 6 & 7 years, U10 – 8 & 9 years, U12 – 10 & 11 years, U14 – 12 & 13 years, U16 – 14 & 15 years, U19 – 16 & older. Everyone is guaranteed mnimum 3 matches in the preliminary round.

The event will for the first time feature a “Mummies” category for; mothers, grandmothers, aunts, big sisters, god-mothers older than 21, some who have never kicked a football before this month. This initiative is in keeping with the campaign launched in 2016 by the Recreational Center of St. Lucia, prompted by the St. Lucia Olympic Committee, to promote Physical Literacy throughout our country.

The idea is to keep people active & moving from age 0 to age 100. Mothers who are active will be healthier and better able to keep up with & care for their active children, and now we hope that football becomes one more activity that mothers can do with their children as quality time spent.

As we continue to engage the youth in multiple “football specific” activities that; enhance skills, improve technique, encourage creativity and boosts self-esteem, the Flow-TDFDP finds it necessary to do even more;

• ensure that every interested child gets the opportunity to experience our advanced training methods, regardless of the environment from which they come from

• encourage those who have started to; stay committed and put in the required effort to achieve their goals/dreams.

• grow these impressionable young ones into well rounded, disciplined, positive citizens. Hence better equipping them to venture into various aspects and fields of society.

• produce world class players who could one day take St. Lucia to a World Cup or Olympic Final.

One of the major challenges faced is that some of these young ones come from difficult family environments and most times basic needs can’t be met by their parents/guardians. On occasions, they may even come to training sessions/events without a proper meal for the day. They are among the most vulnerable and Flow – TDFDP continues to embrace, feed, train and develop them.

NO child is turn away any child for financial reasons. It is an all-day event and EVERY CHILD WILL BE FED a hot lunch & juice. Programme Director – Trevor Daniel says a heartfelt thank you to the loyal sponsors who have come on board and really helped, however we have not met our quota to make the meals 100% FREE to the children.

At this point we will serve every child Mac n Cheese, Baked Chicken, Seasoned Rice, “peas a la Jah” & salad for $3. We hope to make it $2, $1 or $0 if we can pull in some last minute support/sponsorship/donations.

For some children, this event is the ONLY time they have ever experienced that “special super-star” treatment and we hope to be able to facilitate this for many years.

We are aware that at the end of the 74 matches cannot walk away with the Gold, however we believe that every child can be active, every child can have fun, every child can display their skills & abilities, every child can & should enjoy a safe & positive environment, and for us this is our measure of success…To provide every participant with an awesome football experience, which will become lifelong positive memories; if we can accomplish this then event be another huge success!

Thanks to our sponsors; Flow, Sandals, Ministry of Youth Development & Sports, Jn.Marie & Sons, Lucozade, Ribena, Western Union, Rendezvous Hotel, The Voice Publishing & Massy Stores.

Usain Bolt wins final 100m race in Jamaica in emotional farewell

The post Usain Bolt wins final 100m race in Jamaica in emotional farewell appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

usain-700x480KINGSTON, Jamaica – Usain Bolt marked an emotional farewell at a sell-out stadium in Jamaica by winning his final 100m on home soil.

The 30-year-old will bring down the curtain on his illustrious career when he retires in August after the World Championships in London and began his goodbye in front of 30,000 adoring fans in Kingston.

An eight-time Olympic gold medallist, Bolt easily won the ‘Salute a Legend’ race in his first 100m of 2017 but admitted to a rare attack of nerves.

“The run, it was just OK. I must say it was OK. I don’t think I’ve ever been that nervous running a 100m,” he said.

Bolt clocked 10.03 seconds to win before a lap of honour in front of a raucous crowd who danced, waved flags and blew their vuvuzela horns while fireworks lit the sky.

The 100m and 200m world record holder returned to kiss the finishing line before flashing his signature ‘lightning bolt’ pose.

Bolt may not have been too happy with “possibly one of my worst races” but was more concerned with staying injury free and putting “on a show for the crowd” to show them “I’m thankful for the support over the years”.

He added: “Just the atmosphere and the people, the support they came out and gave me, it was really nerve-racking.

“I never expected this, I knew it was going to be big, the stadium was ram-packed so thank you guys for coming out and supporting me.”

He added: “It’s big to see everybody that turned out. It shows that what I’ve done for the sport is a big deal to them and they really appreciate it.

“So thank you and it was my honour to put the sport of track and field at the top and to continue to dominate.

“I’ll try my best even when I’ve hung up my spikes, to really continue to push track and field in any way possible.”

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and International Association of Athletics Federations president Sebastian Coe were also in attendance.

“When you’re sitting in the pub and you’re having the discussion: who is the greatest footballer? Nobody will agree on that,” Coe said.

“If you have the same discussion around golf or tennis, everybody will have different views.

“It’s a slam dunk. [Bolt] is the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen.”

Bolt has won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold at past three Olympic Games – Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

His unprecedented ‘triple triple’ of nine gold medals was downgraded to eight after Jamaican team-mate Nesta Carter, who was part of the quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing, tested positive for a banned substance. Carter has appealed against the decision.

Nevertheless, Bolt’s exploits remain unprecedented and he also holds the world record in the 100m (9.58) and 200m (19.19).

“I wish Usain Bolt could run for another 40 years. He is going to be missed,” said fruit seller Carlos Morgan, who was at Bolt’s last race in Jamaica and comes from the Trelawny region where Bolt grew up.

“I don’t know what is going to happen to track and field when he retires.

“He is a blessing to not just Jamaica but track and field and the world.”

GROS ISLET, St. Lucia – Two days after delivering the fourth-best figures in a one-day international, teenage Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan produced another fine performance against West Indies on Sunday but it was not enough to ensure victory.

While West Indies won the second ODI in St. Lucia by four wickets to square the series; 18-year-old Khan followed up on his seven for 18 performance in the first ODI by picking up 3/26 off his 10 overs.

Kieran Powell (12) and Evin Lewis (33) fell to the leg-spinner before he later sent number six Roston Chase on his way for nine.

West Indies, led by an unbeaten 48 from Man-of-the-Match Shai Hope, won with 64 balls to spare and four wickets in hand.

They scored 138/6 off 39.2 overs, in reply to Afghanistan’s all out for 135 off 37.3 overs.

The final game of the series will be played in St. Lucia on Wednesday.

Warriors dethrone Cavaliers for second NBA title in three years

The post Warriors dethrone Cavaliers for second NBA title in three years appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

170613001014-12-nba-finals-game-5-exlarge-169Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors to win his first NBA championship.

Mission accomplished.

The Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-120 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, clinching their second title in three years and their fifth in team history, avenging the loss to Cleveland after blowing a 3-1 lead a year ago.

Durant led Golden State with 39 points, seven rebounds and five assists and was named NBA Finals MVP in a unanimous vote. He scored 30 or more points in all five Finals games.

“I couldn’t sleep for two days,” Durant told reporter Doris Burke. “I was anxious. I was jittery. I just wanted to lay it all out there.”

Following Monday’s win, he embraced his mother, Wanda Durant, on the court.

“I’m proud of you, son,” she said.

Said Stephen Curry of his teammate: “The way that he embraced the opportunity in The Finals, it was unbelievable.”

This was the first time in NBA history the same two teams met in the NBA Finals for a third straight time. The Warriors won the title in 2015 in six games, while the Cavaliers dramatically won in 2016 in seven, becoming the first team in NBA history to win a series trailing 3-1.

Durant, who famously called his mom the “real MVP” when he won the NBA MVP Award in 2014, knew what it felt like to lose a 3-1 lead — and losing to LeBron James. In the 2012 NBA Finals, Durant was playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder and lost to James — who was then with the Miami Heat — in five games.

After the Cavaliers won the title in 2016, Golden State’s focus turned to a player who wasn’t in the NBA Finals: Durant. He was entering free agency after the Thunder gave away a 3-1 lead against the Warriors in the Western Conference finals. It spurred the most frenzy surrounding an NBA free agent decision since James announced in 2014 that he would return to the Cavaliers after spending four seasons with the Heat.

With a superstar in Durant teaming with another in Curry — as well as with Draymond Green and Klay Thompson — it made Golden State a super team. The only unknown was if the team chemistry would be disrupted with Durant’s addition.

The answer: An emphatic no. The group was close to unstoppable in the regular season and postseason. While the Warriors didn’t surpass their NBA record of 73 regular-season from 2016 (they settled for 67 this year), they still had the NBA’s best regular-season record. Golden State went 16-1 in this year’s playoffs, good for the highest winning percentage (.941) in a single postseason, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers from 2001 (15-1, .938). Twelve of the Warriors’ 16 playoff wins this postseason were by double digits.

Not only could Durant coexist with Curry and the rest of the Warriors, but they also thrived.

Rafael Nadal: French Open title ‘more special’ after tough times for Mallorcan

170611130543-12-french-open-nadal-0611-exlarge-169A 15th grand slam title. A 10th French Open title. “La Decima.”

But for Rafael Nadal, plagued by injuries and forced out of tennis’s limelight over the past few seasons, Sunday’s victory at Roland Garros was “unique.”

A dominant 6-2 6-3 6-1 win over Stan Wawrinka ended a three-year grand slam drought for the Spaniard and the “King of Clay” is now back on his throne.

“It’s something very, very special and unique. A very emotional moment,” Nadal, who before Sunday had last won a grand slam title at the 2014 French Open, told CNN Sport’s Ravi Ubha.

“I’ve had some tough moments with injuries, but that’s part of my career, too. It makes things a little bit more difficult but when you win after all these things, it’s more special.

“I’ve always loved what I’m doing. I’ve always been working hard to do the things I really like.”

Back from the brink

A lengthy injury list — including trouble with his knees, wrist, and back — saw Nadal slip to ninth in the world rankings at the end of last year. But 2017 has seen a resurgence.

After being ousted in five sets by rival Roger Federer at the Australian Open, the Spaniard has been almost unstoppable.

Heading into Roland Garros, he’d lost just one match on clay in 2017. And from the moment he stepped on court in Paris, few dared to bet against him lifting the title.

For the third time in his career, Nadal won every set at a grand slam. He also pulls away from Pete Sampras in the men’s all-time grand slam list; only Federer, with 18, has won more.

But numbers aside, there were other reasons for Nadal to be emotional after his most recent victory.

This was the last time the Mallorcan’s uncle Toni Nadal — who was invited on court to present the trophy on Sunday — will see his nephew lift the French Open title after the pair agreed to end their coaching partnership in late 2016.
Nadal now turns his attention to Wimbledon.

Moving away from his beloved clay courts and with Federer expected to return to the men’s draw, tougher tests lie ahead for the Spaniard on the grass.

But for now, at least, Nadal reigns supreme.

Spanish prosecutors have accused the Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo of defrauding the authorities of millions of euros in tax.

The prosecutor’s office in Madrid says it has filed a lawsuit against the Portuguese player.

He is accused of evading tax of 14.7m euros (£13m; $16m) from 2011 to 2014.

The world’s highest-paid sports star had previously said he was not worried about tax investigations as he had nothing to hide.

On this occasion he is accused of knowingly using a “business structure” to hide income made from his image rights.

In December, leaked documents suggested that Ronaldo had avoided tax on income allegedly held in offshore accounts.

He denied the allegations.

When asked about that investigation, he told a journalist from Radio Television Portuguesa (RTP) “Quien no debe no teme”, which roughly translates as “He who has nothing to hide has no fear.”

Ronaldo is the world’s highest-paid sportsperson for the second successive year, according to Forbes’ annual list of the world’s wealthiest people.

He earned $93m (£72.05m) from salary, bonuses and endorsements last year.
