emmanuel-stewartThe Selection Panel of the West Indies Cricket Board has named the West Indies Under-19 squad for tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The tours are being undertaken as part of the Windies Under-19s’ build-up to the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand from January 12 to February 4 next year.

Quotes from Head Coach, Graeme West

On the squad: The squad is well balanced with a number of “multi-dimensional” players, which will provide depth in all departments. This team is still very young in comparison with the previous squad, but its already a very united group that works well together and has a great desire to learn and improve.

On the overview of the tour: First and foremost, we are going to give 15 talented, young players the opportunity to represent the West Indies, experience touring overseas and play “Youth” International Cricket. We learnt a great deal about a number of the players in the WICB Regional Super50 Tournament. This will be another opportunity to find out which players have the skill-sets to perform consistently at this level and establish who is going to stand up when put under pressure by quality opponents.

On expectations going into the tour: We want to win both series and establish the patterns of play and combinations that will be taken into the World Cup. We will want to see growth and improvement in every game we play and we will want contributions from all members of the squad, so it will be important that the team acclimatizes quickly and gets off to a good start.

The post WORLD: Maxime Hamou banned from French Open for kissing reporter on live TV appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

2017-05-31-12_55_13-maxime-hamou-banned-from-french-open-for-groping-reporter-on-live-tv-_-sport-_-tThe French tennis player Maxime Hamou was banished from the French Open for the duration of the tournament on Tuesday after he attempted to forcibly kiss a female reporter during a live TV interview.

Hamou was interviewed by Eurosport journalist Maly Thomas for the program Avantage Leconte after his first-round loss to Pablo Cuevas on Monday. The 21-year-old wrapped his arm around Thomas’s shoulder and kissed her on the head and neck as she rebuffed him, prompting laughter and clapping from the commentators in the studio.

“The management of the tournament has decided to revoke Maxime Hamou’s accreditation following his reprehensible behavior with a journalist yesterday,” the French Tennis Federation said in a statement. He could face further sanctions upon a review of the incident by the FTT’s disputes committee.

Thomas described the episode as “frankly unpleasant” in an interview with Huffington Post France, adding: “If I hadn’t been live on air, I would have punched him.”

Cécile Duflot, the former head of France’s Green Party, decried the episode on social media. “He kisses her by force, she tries to get away, he holds her by the neck and everyone … laughs,” Duflot wrote on Twitter in French.

Hamou, the world No287, was one of eight players granted a wild card into the French Open qualifying draw, earning a place in Monday’s first-round tie by winning three matches last week.

Eurosport issued a statement critical of Hamou’s “highly inappropriate” behaviour.

“We sincerely regret the incident that occurred during yesterday evening’s interview between Maly Thomas and Maxime Hamou,” the statement read. “The behaviour of the interviewee was highly inappropriate and we do not condone such conduct in any way. Maly is a highly respected journalist and we are pleased that a full apology is being offered.”

Hamou expressed remorse for the incident, saying he wanted to apologize to Thomas in person. “I want to offer my deepest apologies to Maly Thomas if she felt hurt or shocked by my attitude during her interview,” Hamou told the French newspaper l’Equipe.

“I just lived a wonderful week here in Roland Garros living my most beautiful emotions as a tennis player, and I let my overflow of enthusiasm express myself awkwardly towards Maly, who I know and sincerely respect. Nothing of all that is written was my intention.

“I am at her disposal to apologise to her in person if she so wishes. I learn every day from my mistakes to become a better tennis player and a better person.”

It is a family affair at the Jermain Defoe Foundation football tournament in Romford.

As they spend bank holiday Monday seeking to raise funds for their work in St Lucia, the entire clan is busy helping. There’s Jermain himself presenting the prizes to winning teams, posing for selfies, signing junior football shirts. There’s his cousin volunteering as tournament co-ordinator. And there, next to the merchandise stand where signed adidas balls are selling fast, is the cake stall, staffed by his mother.

“She’s been up all night baking, that’s what my mum does,” Defoe says. “What’s her best cake? Come on man, they’re all good, she’s my mum.”

It is in honour of his mother, he explains, that he established the Foundation. Her family hails from St Lucia and in 2010 she and her son went there on holiday to discover it had been battered by a recent hurricane. The island’s one children’s home had been destroyed. Chastened by what he had seen, Defoe set to work.

“People talk about St Lucia they think of nice beaches, amazing hotels, a honeymoon destination. When I tell people the poverty, that a lot of kids live on the street, they don’t know. As a family we decided to try and do as much as we can.”

At the end of June, Defoe is heading to the island for the official opening of the Foundation’s children’s home, which has been built and staffed by money raised at events like this.

“Amazing how it’s gone,” he smiles. “The numbers here, there’s 32 teams, all brought their families, having a great time.”

Defoe was born just down the road in Canning Town, and he says he relishes mixing like this with the locals. “My mum always stressed the importance of being part of your community, of being grateful. I’ve been blessed in life, lucky to do what I’ve done. And I’m not going to lie, it’s fun to give something back. There’s no better feeling than seeing people smiling. I reckon it’s the cakes.”

Not that he will be trying any. Encouraged by his girlfriend, Defoe recently turned vegan. He reckons the diet beneficial, if challenging.

“It’s hard, I love fish,” he says. “But I’ve found not eating meat makes me feel lighter on my feet.”

He took it up because, turning 35 in October, he is prepared to do anything to maintain his scoring edge. And dispensing of animal products appears to have worked. His finishing prowess with Sunderland this season was rewarded with his first England cap in four years when he was called up for the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania in March.

“Roy Hodgson didn’t want me, I was realistic, I accepted it,” he says of an international career that appeared to have reached its natural conclusion. “But I always wanted to be back, always felt I could do a job. Now Gareth Southgate has come in I feel appreciated, valued again.”

He speaks in glowing terms of the new England manager, who has named him in the squad for the forthcoming matches with Scotland and France.

“Even if he never picked me again I’d always say nice things about him because of the way he has treated me.” Brilliant man management, Defoe calls it. And he gives an example:

“When we played Lithuania, I scored the goal, then I was chosen for the drug test. Everyone was celebrating in the dressing room, but he came out, found me in the drug test room and hugged me. I don’t care who you are, what you’ve done in your career, when a manager says well done, those are the best words.”

It was an emotional occasion for Defoe anyway. He walked on to the pitch holding the hand of Bradley Lowery, the terminally ill six-year-old with whom he has struck up unlikely friendship.

“The way he looked at me that day, the smile: it’s such a good feeling that you could bring something to his life. Everywhere I go people ask after him. [Sunderland manager] David Moyes took us to New York mid-season and people were coming up to me saying ‘how’s Bradley?’ Part of you feels it’s good that we have helped raise awareness of the illness. But it’s also really sad. When you see a six-year-old suffer like that, it’s so hard to understand. He’s hardly had a life. I pray for him every day, just ask God to heal him.”

It was no surprise when, after the game, Defoe dedicated his goal to the boy.

“I’ve scored a lot of goals, but that goal was something else. It was Mother’s Day, Bradley was with me, I felt I had to score. It was something I was craving so bad. I’d rehearsed it so much in my mind when it happened, it was like, wow, this is meant to be. When I got the goal, I just felt blessed.”

Scoring goals has always been his currency; one, he admits, which has only increased in value through his career.

“The older I’ve got, the buzz from scoring goals has grown and grown.” Especially now, after a brief sojourn in Toronto, that he is back scoring in the Premier League.

“I went on holiday to Canada,” he smiles of his season in the MLS. “I missed the Premier League so much. I missed the intensity. I missed the pressure. When people say to me, ‘this is a big game, you have to score’, I like that. I liked the fact people were saying I had to score for England to justify the manager bringing me back. I like it when I have something to prove. You get that little bit of fire in your stomach.”

It is a fire that delivered 15 goals in a Sunderland shirt last season, an astonishing haul given the side appeared doomed from the outset.

“Actually, being in a side at the bottom makes you sharper,” he reckons. “I know in a game I might not get anything more than a half chance, so I’d better make the most of it. You’ve got to be ruthless.” His single-mindedness, he insists, has only increased with age.

“Sometimes people say to me, why did you go there at that moment just as the ball was coming and I go: I don’t know, I just did it. It’s instinctive. I’ve practised so much over the years, I’ve rehearsed it so many times, it’s natural. That said, it’s like any sport: the more you practise, the more natural you are.”

Wherever they come from, his goals will not be for Sunderland next season. Following relegation, he is moving on a free transfer. And while he has not yet announced his next destination, with Bournemouth and his first club West Ham among those apparently keen, he says the decision has been made.

“When you’re scoring goals, let’s be honest, clubs are going to want you. I’ve had a lot of interest. But I’ve got an idea where I’m going. When it comes to July everyone will know. I know where I want to go to kick on again. I don’t want to stand still.”

In a clue to his destination, he says the manager has been a crucial part of his choice.

“Partly it’s how he wants to play, but mainly it’s: is he comfortable trying to improve me? Some managers just let senior players get on with it. I don’t want that. I want to be challenged.”

Indeed, he says he has become ever more interested in how managers operate.

“I’m like a sponge, I think about stuff. I think: if I was a manager how would I play this? I think of the bosses I’ve had, I like what he does, I’ll do it like him or I definitely won’t do it like that. I’m thinking like that more and more. I’m in my car on the way to the ground, thinking, I wonder what team the manager’s going to pick, this is what I’d pick. I suppose I’m heading in the direction of being a coach.”

But not, he insists, for a while yet.

“I want to be in Russia [for the 2018 World Cup], 100 per cent. If I continue scoring goals, then I believe the manager will take me. But obviously I’ve got to keep scoring.”

Though before that there is a more pressing matter to attend to at the Jermain Defoe Foundation Football Tournament: checking on the cake sales.

West Indies easily beat an out-of-sorts Afghanistan by 29 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis system in a low-keyed, rain-hit affair, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series here Saturday night.

In a contest reduced to 15 overs per side at Warner Park, West Indies rallied to 112 for three with Chadwick Walton top-scoring with 29, his opening partner Lewis getting 25 and Marlon Samuels, 22.

Set a revised target of 123, Afghanistan never looked the part and faded quickly without so much as a whimper to end on 93 all out with nine balls remaining.

Seamer Kesrick Williams finished with three for 11 to take Man-of-the-Match honours while captain and medium pacer Carlos Brathwaite claimed two for 26.

West Indies, who won Friday’s opener by six wickets, will now look to make a clean sweep of the series in the final match on Monday at the same venue.

Saturday’s win broke a losing slide for the reigning World champions who had lost back-to-back T20 series to Pakistan in the last 10 months.

Opting to bat first, West Indies were away to a flier as Walton and Lewis put on 42 off 27 deliveries.

The right-handed Walton faced 17 deliveries and struck four fours and one six before holing out to long-on off off-spinner Mohammad Nabi in the fifth over.

Lewis, who blasted a four and a six in a 28-ball knock, put on a further 32 for the second wicket with Samuels before he perished in the 10th over, pulling seamer Karim Janat into the deep.

West Indies had reached 79 for two after 11 overs when heavy rain caused a near two-hour break in the innings.

With just four overs left to face after a revision of overs on resumption, the hosts managed to add only 33 runs as the Afghan bowlers kept their wits about them under pressure.

Afghanistan appeared to lack a clear plan for their run chase and quickly lost Gulbadin Naib in the third over for 12, bowled by leg-spinner Samuel Badree with the score on 15.

Williams then struck twice in the following over – the first of his spell – to further set back the visitors.

First, he had opener Noor Ali Zadran caught at short fine leg by Jerome Taylor for six after being tucked up by a short ball and off the very next delivery, claimed Samiullah Shenwari without scoring to a catch at the wicket.

Tottering on 19 for three, Afghanistan continued to lose wickets steadily. Mohammad Nabi stylishly cut off-spinner Sunil Narine behind square for four in the seventh over but was then run out five balls in the same over looking for a non-existent single.

And captain Asghar Stanikzai perished two balls later in the following over from Brathwaite when he tugged a short ball to Lendl Simmons running around from mid-wicket to mid-on, after clearing the ropes at mid-wicket with the previous delivery.

Three more wickets fell for 14 runs in the space of 18 balls to leave Afghanistan in danger of their lowest-ever T20 total at 55 for eight in the 11th over.

But top-scorer Karim Janat struck a four and two sixes in a 15-ball 20, putting on 30 off 10 balls for the ninth wicket with Dawlat Zadran (9).

The charge, however, came a little too late and though the 12th over from Brathwaite leaked 18 runs, the required run rate remained onerous at 13 and in the end proved overwhelming.

The post COMMENTARY: After Real Madrid’s latest Champions League success, can a Premier League club conquer Europe again? It’s a tall order appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

Real Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy after defeating Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff to win the European Cup for a record 12th time.

Real Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy after defeating Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff to win the European Cup for a record 12th time.

It is now five years and counting since an English team – Chelsea – last reached the final of the Champions League.

And next season it will be a decade since the pot was in the hands of Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United’s skipper, on that rain-sodden night in Moscow when the Red Devils defeated the Blues on penalties.

If that seems a long time ago, then, in football terms, it is.

United have fallen at the final hurdle twice since then, both times to Barcelona. But with Leicester surprisingly making it further than everyone else by reaching quarter-finals last season – it is relevant to ask when will English teams again trouble the continent’s best?

The array of managerial talent would suggest that it is only a matter of time.

Of next year’s contestants, Manchester City and Manchester United would be best-placed to put a dent in the armoury of the best.

But, even then, it looks to be a long shot.

The reason for that can be found in the pedigree of the two managers.

Out of the five Premier League bosses who will contest the competition, both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho know what it takes to win.

Arguably, given the depth of his experience, allied to the fact that he has now won both the UEFA Cup with Porto and Europa League at Old Trafford, if anyone is equipped to go deep, then it is Mourinho.

He is used to fighting on several fronts. The Portuguese has always gone resiliently at competitions. He did so at Chelsea and has continued in that vein under his new employers.

His main gripe will be the quality of players at his disposal. Much will depend on his club’s summer building programme.

It is impossible to discount Guardiola’s claims.

He wowed football with arguably the best Barcelona team of its generation. Potentially, one of the best of all-time.

And, certainly, the performance at Wembley to defeat Manchester United, six years ago, was among the most emphatic displays on the showpiece occasion.

Counting against the Spaniard is the fact that Manchester City disappointed in what was his first crack last season. He, too, needs to make a splash with his signings.

Plenty will depend, of course, on how the five entrants perform during the close season and each squad will have to add depth if a war on several fronts is to be conducted successfully.

For instance, Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice XI is a match for any. But they have a heavy workload and the hoodoo of Wembley to contend with.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool look good going forward. But can the defence, such as it is, repel Europe’s best? While champions Chelsea have carried all before them, Antonio Conte’s squad does not look the deepest, at present, and the Italian has not taken any team beyond the quarter-finals.

Of course, the age-old argument about the strength of the Premier League, relative to others, will come to the fore.

But it is a fact that several clubs are now battle-hardened and have become accustomed to reaching the knockout stages.

When the draw is made, Real Madrid and Barcelona always appear to have the teams to beat. But the core of this Juventus side, which has reached Cardiff, should be around for a few years yet.

Atletico Madrid have prospered under Diego Simeone, another who knows how to win in the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain are backed with an unlimited pot of cash and, if rumours linking them to £60million Borussia Dortmund hotshot Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are realised, they too will present a clear and present danger to the elite.

Bayern Munich are rebuilding, now that Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are growing older, but, as Arsenal routinely discover, cannot be discounted when the chips are down.

Since Ferdinand raised the most famous trophy in European football, England have been represented twice – both times by Manchester United.

And, even though we have five chances to win, it looks a tall order on current form for any of our domestic clubs to upset the form book and reign supreme once more.

jason-holder-of-west-indies-celebrates2

Cricket West Indies (CWI) will begin its 91st year today, with a new name and website as part of a comprehensive rebranding programme.

From today the West Indies Cricket Board will be renamed Cricket West Indies and formally recognise all representative teams as the WINDIES.

CEO Johnny Grave, commented:

“Cricket West Indies better reflects how the organisation operates, as there are many different stakeholders who we work in partnership with, under the unifying aim of improving cricket at all levels within the region. We plan to work even more closely with them over the next few years and consultation will begin immediately as we develop a new strategic plan for 2018-2023.”

President Dave Cameron added:

“Whilst the Board of Directors has an important role, we feel that the new name is more inclusive and appropriate, as we want to recognise the valuable role that our players, territorial boards, staff, supporters, governments, coaches, match officials and volunteers, play in the organisation. For Cricket West Indies to operate effectively and efficiently we need all of our stakeholders to work in partnership and the name change is an important first step in our strategy.”

The WINDIES name has long been associated with the representative teams within International cricket and this new brand will be used on all team playing shirts along with a new website focused on providing all WINDIES supporters more user-friendly information including live scores, team updates, videos and player information.

The new website is www.cricketwestindies.org and the new match centre will launch on www.windiescricket.com ahead of the first International T20 against Afghanistan on Friday, June 2.

The post PRESS RELEASE: St. Lucia 2017 Open Dinghy Championships appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

2016-05-14-14-19-52

The St. Lucia Yacht Club will once again be hosting its annual Open Dinghy Championships this weekend with races starting on Saturday June 4 in Rodney Bay from 9am and continuing on Sunday.

This year’s fleet of Optimist and Laser dinghies will be sailed by St. Lucia’s young sailors in the Yacht Club’s Youth sailing programme as well as our older sailing champions, Stephanie Devaux-Lovell, Danny Dillon, Guillaume Chevrier and Adonai Modeste.

We will be missing Luc Chevrier this year who has spent the last 8 months training and racing in France successfully climbing the rungs to the top of the European Sailing circuit.

St. Lucian sailors will be joined by Martinicans from the Cercle Nautique de Marin and Neptune and for the first time the Grenada Sailing Association has sent a team of 6 sailors who will compete in their first regional regatta.

The St. Lucia Yacht Club recognizes that these are difficult times and is very grateful for the continued support and commitment to sailing that has been given by our big sponsors: Johnsons Marine Hardware, Island Water World, IGY Marinas, CATS (1995) Ltd, Blue Waters, DSL-Yachting, Cariquisine as well as those smaller but very important sponsors, Chateau Mygo Restaurant, Massy Foods (Capri Sun), Cream ‘n Bean ( Ferrands Dairy), Blue Waters, Peppers Toy Store.

This annual regatta was originally made possible by the support given by a few Yacht Club members  who saw the wonderful opportunity that the Yacht Club has given to young St. Lucians for many years.

Sailing is a sport that inspires young people to understand and respect the sea and wind and teaches them the skills required to drive a boat whose unique design is to harness that natural energy with masterful beauty.

Mr. Christopher Renwick, Mr. Ted Bull and Mr. Jonathan Everett recognized the value in this and were the original sponsors of what was first the National Dinghy Championships hosted by the Yacht Club over 8 years ago.

This year’s regatta will, again, see Jonathan Everett a crewmember on the Regatta Race Committee boat and while the Optimist and Laser class championship trophies bear the names of all three gentlemen, the regatta and those involved will sorrowfully miss Chris Renwick and Ted Bull who both passed within the last 6 months.

Now, over 8 years after the first National Championships, the St. Lucia Yacht Club is very happy to announce the 2017 Open Dinghy Championships, a regatta that has become recognized by the Caribbean Sailing Association and enjoyed by all who participate in it each year.

The SLYC extends an invitation to members of the public to watch the races onboard the ENDLESS SUMMER, CATS (1995) Ltd, spectator boat on Sunday June 4. ENDLESS SUMMER will leave the dock at IGY: Rodney Bay Marina at 8:30 am on Sunday, but if you miss it you can board from the beach at the Yacht Club at 9am and by request later
in the day.

The regatta prize giving and BBQ will begin at 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies has named the Windies 13-man squad for the upcoming One-Day Internationals against Afghanistan.

The squad includes one uncapped player in this format – Roston Chase, the 25-year-old allrounder. He made his international debut last year and has so far played 10 Test matches with 728 runs, including three centuries.

The ODI Series will be played at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia on June 9, 11 and 14. First ball in the day/night matches is 2:30pm (1:30pm Jamaica Time).

FULL SQUAD

Jason Holder (captain)

Devendra Bishoo

Jonathan Carter

Roston Chase

Miguel Cummins

Shannon Gabriel

Shai Hope

Alzarri Joseph

Evin Lewis

Jason Mohammed

Ashley Nurse

Kieran Powell

Rovman Powell

Quotes from Courtney Browne, CWI Chairman of Selectors: “On the composition of the squad: Roston Chase is the one new player in the squad. He was considered before for ODI selection, primarily because of his all-round ability. With his prolific run scoring in the last Test series and his continued steady all-round performances in the PCL we now feel it’s time to introduce him to ODI cricket. He was not among the leading runscorers in the Super50 tournament earlier this year, but we believe with his skill set and the way he has been playing he could be an asset. His outstanding efforts with the bat could not be ignored any longer coupled with his useful bowling can only add value to our squad.”

On the bowling attack: “Our bowling attack remains the same with four seamers and two specialist spinners. With Roston now adding an additional spinning option for the captain, this offers further variety to the bowling attack. This gives the team the option of playing an additional fast bowler if required.”

On conditions in St Lucia: “Over the last few years, the pitch has produced good bounce and carry for faster bowlers. If the pitches stay true to form we can expect to see that extra bit of assistance for our pace attack.”

As Usain Bolt prepares for his final race on home soil at the upcoming Racers Grand Prix, long-time sponsor, Digicel, has announced that it will be paying homage to the sprint king with a big celebration following the historic race dubbed, “Salute to a Legend” at the National Stadium in Jamaica on Saturday 10th June, 2017.

And while tickets to the event itself are going like ‘hot bread’, Digicel is ensuring that Bolt’s fans across the region will also be able to get a front row stadium view of his final home run in live and living colour on SportsMax – the Caribbean’s #1 sports channel – via PlayGo, Digicel’s streaming app.

And making it even more unmissable, Digicel is offering everyone who downloads the app a 30 day PlayGo subscription for free. Digicel Play TV customers can also tune in the SportsMax channel on their TV to watch the Grand Prix.

“Usain’s accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary and we are always delighted to leverage our platforms to give his fans the opportunity to watch him in action. Now with PlayGo, people who are unable to attend the Grand Prix can still join in the celebrations,” said Peter Lloyd, Digicel Group Director of Marketing.

The celebrations will be nothing short of spectacular with electrifying performances from the likes of Beenie Man, Ding Dong, Tifa and I Octane who will be taking the stage immediately following the 100 metres race at 10:10pm.

Digicel’s Chief Speed Officer, Usain Bolt, said; “I’m really looking forward to closing out my final race here in front of some of my biggest fans – it’s going to be epic. I’m generally not an emotional person, but I might shed a tear. I mean, this is where it all began for me so I’m definitely looking forward to putting on a show.”

He continued; “I would also like to tell my fans in Jamaica and all over the world, who have supported me over the years – not to mention the amazing reception received in every country – thank you. I love you all.”
