The young footballers won the trip after reaching the final round of the Flow Ultimate Football Experience which was hosted by Flow and the Manchester United Football Club in Trinidad.

The event, which took place recently, was the culmination of a series of competitions across Flow’s 15 markets throughout the Caribbean. The finals at President’s Grounds, St Ann’s saw two young footballers from each country vying for the coveted prize.

Among the 30 participants, 15 countries were represented – Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman, Curacao, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Turks & Caicos.

Dwight Yorke, former striker for Manchester United and the National Team for Trinidad and Tobago gives practical advice to a group of young footballers from the Flow Ultimate Football Experience.

They participated in a two-day skills session with one-on-one training with Manchester United Soccer School Coaches (MUSS), Head Coach Mike Neary and Billy Miller. This is the second year of collaboration between Flow and MUSS. Through the Flow Ultimate Football Experience, the two partners gave the young athletes a greater opportunity at success and brought the region closer to one of their favourite sports.

Ronaldo Flowers has been given the nickname ‘Flower Power’ on the field. Originally from Jamaica but lives in Antigua, Flowers was named after the famous footballer. The youngster has been playing the game for the past four years and has in his vision to become a professional player. He plays central attack and midfield positions, which allow him to do what he likes best, score goals.

“It felt like a dream coming true,” Flowers said following the announcement. “The challenge was very difficult because there were other talented players but I played hard.”

Che Benny has been playing football since the age of five when his uncle took him to see St Ann’s Rangers – the team with which he still plays. Team coach Everett Williams, who was also present at the weekend challenge, says Benny was born with a natural talent. He was happy Benny received the exposure playing with other footballers in the Caribbean.

“I stepped up to the plate,” Benny said after winning the award. He also hopes to meet his favourite footballer, the Red Devils’ midfielder Juan Mata when he visits Manchester. Young Benny also said “football is my passion, I eat, sleep and dream about football and playing the sport professionally.”

Flowers and Benny, along with their coaches, will travel to the world-famous football stadium to see Manchester United’s final Premier League game of the season against Crystal Palace. This VIP experience will also include a visit to the Manchester United Museum and Tour, taking in the history of the club followed by a tour of the iconic stadium.

The two winners received their trophies from top officials present on the stage including Trinidad and Tobago Sports Ambassador and former Manchester United player, Dwight Yorke and Trinidad’s Minister of Sport, Hon. Daryll Williams.

Minister Williams thanked Flow in his remarks for providing this kind of opportunity for young footballers in the region.

Minister Williams reflected “I looked up to Dwight Yorke when I was a young footballer as being an inspiration for Caribbean players however there were no such opportunities like this one from Flow and Manchester United. Through this Flow Ultimate Football Experience you youngsters now have access to some of the best coaches and players in the world of football.”

“I am pleased for them both!” said a very proud Wendy McDonald, Flow’s Senior Director of Communications for the Caribbean, “This is a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and definitely the “ultimate football experience” that these two young footballers have been given through Flow’s partnership with Manchester United. We will continue to follow their journey to Manchester and we hope this will encourage even more aspiring footballers from the Caribbean to be ready for opportunities like this.”

QUOTES from Chairman of the Selection Panel, Courtney Browne:

On the composition of the squad: After the T20 Series against Pakistan we felt that it was important to keep the same group together so that the coaches can continue developing the young players. This coupled with the vast T20 experience of some of our senior players can help us to build a very formidable unit.

On the inclusion of fast bowler, Ronsford Beaton: Our Head Coach, Stuart Law, has asked for someone who can add some firepower to the attack. We felt that Ronsford has shown he can bowl with sustained pace in T20 cricket. We are confident he will do very well.

On all-rounder, Jason Holder, being rested: Jason has been going for a while now and led the team from the front with his performances. He has requested a break and after discussion with the staff we have granted him this period to refresh himself and prepare for the upcoming ODIs against Afghanistan and India.

Overall outlook for the series: In developing a high performance unit there is never room for complacency and our expectation is to win against a team that is ranked lower than us in the ICC rankings.

On the WICB President’s XI Squad: This is an opportunity for the experienced players to restate their desire to represent West Indies again by way of performance and the inexperienced players to show their ability at a higher level with a view to be considered for selection in the future.

Currently, the WICB has followed a stringent policy of considering only those players who have featured in the domestic 50-over competition, one that goes back to 2010, under the regime of Julian Hunte and Ernest Hilaire.

The current criterion has ruled out a bunch of senior players including Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. None of them were part of West Indies’ most recent series against Pakistan, which they lost 2-1, falling further behind in their race to be among the top eight teams in the ICC rankings and so qualify directly for the 2019 World Cup.

But if this change in selection policy is cleared, West Indies could significantly boost their chances of fielding a full-strength team leading up to the showpiece event.

“There is some discussion going on about revisiting the eligibility rule,” Browne told Line and Length, a Barbados-based network. “I know it’s with a working committee. That will then go to the board. But we have to understand our domestic cricket is key.

“Players coming out of domestic cricket and showing they can perform at the international level is important. Yes, we have to look at it [the eligibility rule] but also be mindful that we have to develop our own domestic product, a stage where we can have a very good standard of regional cricket.”

However, Browne also made it clear he would rather not have a situation where young players who have come through the regional system are ignored. Vishaul Singh and Shimron Hetmyer, who captained West Indies to the Under-19 World Cup title last year, are two examples he cited while explaining the need to maintain continuity. The pair gave modest returns – 159 runs in 12 innings between them – having played their first three Tests over the last couple of months.

“We have a lot of young developing players, they’re all bunched together in terms of number of Tests, that’s par for the course. When you have a bunch of people you’re exposing to international cricket, you will tend to get these sorts of performances. But the good thing about it is, you have the coaching team and you have to give them some time to develop players.

“There’s no regret [in giving them opportunities]. They came through the system, we understand they’re young players and need time to develop. When you’re looking at development process, it’s going to be a slow process. We’re not going to find a sensation overnight.”

Browne was pleased with the enthusiasm of the new recruits. “They’ve shown the fans here’s a bunch of young people who are showing fight. It has shown the players too that with determination and passion like that, you can be competitive.”

Bravo had recently said he was available for T20 selection but would not give up his contracts around the world to play domestic cricket in the West Indies because playing in those tournaments did not guarantee selection. He had also said things could change if “structure changes or something different happens”. (ESPNCricinfo)

2017-05-25-11_49_39-windies-women-start-world-cup-preparation-with-team-bonding-campMembers of the West Indies Women’s team heading to the ICC Women’s World Cup in the United Kingdom will assemble for a brief camp, starting on Friday in Barbados.

Head coach Vasbert Drakes, in a release said the focus of the camp will primarily be team bonding, as the side had not been together since last November in India.

“We are eager to get the group together,” said Drakes. “It’s an exciting line-up of players with a balance of established players, a couple of returnees and a group of four new faces.

“This camp will enable the team management unit to spend valuable time with the players and start to build the desire for success in the team, as they get ready to face the challenges of the World Cup.”

The coach said the camp will be a good opportunity to re-create the strong team culture that was a hallmark of the team over the last two years.

“We want to help the new players integrate, while rekindling the camaraderie and relationships with the familiar faces, so that there is a healthy team environment in which everyone can focus on performance and ultimately being successful at the World Cup,” he added.

In addition to team building activities, the members of the squad will also be part of player development sessions, as well as a series of physical assessments during the five-day camp, which precedes the team’s departure next Wednesday.

On arrival in the UK, the team will have a 17-day training camp in Southampton, including practice matches against an England Women’s XI on June 6 at Loughborough and the Southern Vipers on June 9 at the Ageas Bowl before moving to the city of Leicester for the formal start of the Women’s World Cup programme.

“We will have almost a month in the UK prior to our opening game in the World Cup to get the team into game mode,” said Drakes.

“We will spend that time trying to get acclimatised to the conditions and being purposeful in our build-up to the tournament, so that we can significantly improve on our past performances and prepare to take on the World.”

The Windies Women were runners-up at the previous Women’s World Cup in India, when Australia Women claimed their sixth title with a 114-run victory at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Stafanie Taylor’s side earned automatic qualification to the Women’s World Cup following their fourth place finish in the ICC Women’s Championship — a tournament contested between the top eight sides in the World over the last two years.

The post PRESS RELEASE: National Primary Schools and National Secondary Schools swim meet set for Monday appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

Competition_swimming_pool_blockThe St Lucia Amateur Swimming Association (SLASA) in collaboration with the Department of Youth Development and Sports will be hosting the National Primary Schools and National Secondary Schools swim meet on Monday, May 29th.

The event being held at Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre is sure to draw enthusiasts of all ages to watch as our schools compete for the title of National School Swimming Champion.

The meet not only allows for the development of swimming across the island, but it gives the schools another avenue to flex their muscles in the holistic approach to learning.  Additionally, students that do not currently swim with a club are allowed the chance to demonstrate their skills while representing their schools. Annually, the Schools Swim Meet takes place during the 3rd term to allow schools to develop their swimming program from the beginning of the school year.

The Primary schools will be competing from 9 am until 12 noon on Monday with a quick opening ceremony for both meets at 8:55 AM.  The reigning champions – Montessori School – will be on deck vying to keep their title for another year.  Upcoming local swimmers such as Naima Hazell and Antoine Destang will be representing their schools.  There are approximately 90 Primary School Students participating in the event.

The Secondary Schools swim meet will begin at 1 PM and run through 4 PM.  St Joseph’s convent is ready to maintain the title of reigning champions at the secondary school level.  This year we will see the return of the Boys Training Centre to the swim meet, which is very uplifting to the swimming fraternity.  There are approximately 130 secondary school students registered to compete for the various schools entered.

Although there were challenges in securing a date to allow as many students to participate, SLASA is pleased they are able to host this event again.

It would not be possible without the contribution from the Department of Youth Development and Sports as well as Easy Click Books, Blue Waters, and Bay Gardens Resorts.  Special thanks go out to all sponsors, stakeholders and volunteers for their assistance in making this year’s Schools Swim Meet a success.

phoo
The Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union held final matches and prize giving of the LUCELEC Michael Mathurin Challenge on the 20th May 2017 at the La Clery playing field.

This is the second tournament in the Union’s calendar of events. The final matches saw the Rugby Veterans team versus the VBCC Stingers male team and the VBCC female team vs the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College representative team.

When the dust settled the VBCC Stingers male team emerged tournament winners beating the Veterans 28 to 7.

The tournament is in its second year and was designed to honour a former rugby player Michael Mathurin who passed away a few years ago.

At the prizing giving ceremony, the President of the Union described Michael Mathurin as someone who engendered the core values of rugby, INTEGRITY, PASSION, SOLIDARITY, DISCIPLINE and RESPECT. These core values quite fittingly described Michael Mathurin’s attitude and approach to the game and life.

Mike was a former employee of LUCELEC and the SLRFU has partnered with LUCELEC to stage the tournament.

This year’s tournament focused on youth and women in rugby. The tournament was used as a qualifier to select a national women’s 7’s rugby team.

The women’s team will be going to Guadeloupe in June to participate in a women’s 7-a-side rugby tournament.

The SLRFU like to thank Mrs. Mathurin for allowing the SLRFU to hold the tournament in Mike’s honour

  1.  Lucelec for the sponsorship of the tournament
  2.  Mr. Jackson Jules of M&C Hardware for the line marking paint
  3.  The La Clery and SALCC field committees for allowing us to stage the competition on their fields
  4.  The match officials, Garner Felicien, Shaun Alcindor, Mina Espeleta , Douglas George and Renatta Frederick
  5. The tournament physiotherapist, Ms. Allain
