The University of the Virgin Islands Athletics Program welcomed three new full-time coaches on Monday, June 19, at a press conference held in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

The new hires include men’s Basketball Coach Jeff Jones, Women’s basketball Coach Reggie Carrick and women and men’s Soccer Coach Charles Long. All officially joined the UVI family this summer.

“This is an historic day for the University of the Virgin Islands athletics,” said UVI President David Hall. “It is historic because we have made a decision to move towards having full-time coaches.” These coaches come with a wealth of experience and an understanding that our mission is not just to win games, although that is important, but also to help to develop and nurture people, and that is critical to this University.”

“The hiring of these experienced and impressive coaches represents a major change and opportunity for growth for our athletic program,” Dr. Hall continued. “Under the overall leadership of Athletic Director Wilberto Ramos, these coaches will ensure that UVI is more competitive, exciting and compelling in men’s and women’s basketball and soccer. Our athletic future just got brighter.”

“Athletics can be an important aspect of university life – for the athletes, and also for school spirit,” said Dr. Camille McKayle, UVI provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “We are looking forward to building on our base to enhance athletics on both campuses.”

Coach Jones comes to UVI from Carver College in Atlanta, Ga. He has 23 years of college experience, has had four-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament appearances, final-four rank top-seven in the NAIA and two-conference championship. As an assistant coach, Jones won the NCAA Division II National Tournament. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with a minor in recreation from Pittsburg State University.

“Our goal is to bring in a team that is very global that cannot only represent the Virgin Islands but represent worldwide,” said Coach Jones. “We are looking for young men that will fit this institution academically, socially and athletically.”

Jones said that his number one goal is that these are student athletes, and they are here to graduate; basketball is second. “Second thing, we are here to win a national championship,” he said. “We are going to work hard to bring a national championship to UVI.”

“Third thing, we must give to others,” he said. “We must work in the community. We must volunteer our time at elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, non-profits, housing authority – whatever needs to be done in the community.”

Coach Reggie Carrick, who could not attend Monday’s press conference, comes to the University from Olds College in Alberta, Canada. Carrick ended his sixth season with the Olds College women’s basketball team in 2016. In his 12 years as college and university head coach, he has 12 All-Conference selection and was named the 2004 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Coach of the year. He holds the 2007 U.S. National Record for turnarounds going from one win and 23 losses to 24 wins and nine losses. This is a standing record for four year colleges of any level in women’s basketball. Coach Carrick has a Master of Education from Delta State University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Augustana University.

Coach Long comes to UVI from Garden City Community College, Kansas, where he served as Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach. He has more than 16 years’ experience in coaching men and women’s soccer teams at universities and colleges. At Talladega College, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the NAIA, Long turned the program around from 1-16 to 15 -5 into a winning program and was recruited to start a women’s soccer program.

“Coach Long will bring to the University the necessary skills that will allow all students to become athletically inclined based on his experience,” UVI Athletic Director Wilberto Ramos said. “His knowledge and experience on college education and coaching surpasses our expectations and I believe that with his creative ideas we can strategically enhance our department on both campuses.”

Long said that his goal is to recruit quality student athletes that can make a difference on campus. He is working on recruiting juniors for the Territory to encourage them to attend UVI. His plans are to have a full schedule of games on St. Croix and hopes to have a few games on the St. Thomas Campus as well. “I look forward to building a program here,” said Coach Long.

Long is primarily responsible for the men’s and women’s soccer programs, which compete in the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria (LAI) league and NAIA. He will assist in recruitment, and building teams, coordinating team development, and preparing UVI for the next level of competition. The coach will also help with coordinating sports tournaments throughout the academic school year. As an instructor of Health and Physical Education, the position will provide teaching in health and physical education that are part of the general education requirement for all students.

“Part of our commitment is hiring coaches who are full-time members of the University community, as faculty or as members of the athletics staff,” said Dr. McKayle. “Our students-athletes will benefit, and this is just the beginning. We hope that the entire Virgin Islands community will rally behind our UVI Buccaneers by coming to the games and encouraging our athletes.”

In the 2017-2018 season, UVI will have six programs representing six sports for men and women’s teams: basketball, soccer, cross country, track and field, weightlifting, golf and beach volleyball. Ramos said teams with both genders will be created when developing new teams. “I think that is something that we need to have participation from both genders in the Athletic Department,” Ramos said.

The University will increase the amount of games held at UVI, he said. One of the main goals is to enhance and improve the experience for not just the student athlete but the entire student population at UVI. With more home games we will have more activities where the students can be part of the game.

UVI’s first men’s basketball game will be the UVI Classic on Oct. 27. There will also be games on Oct. 28 and 29. “We would like to see this gym full to capacity,” Jones said.

He said that one of the goals of the Athletic Program is to serve the community. Basketball camps have been planned on Aug. 3-5, at the Educational Complex on St. Croix and Aug. 10-12, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. Both camps will be held from 8 a.m. to noon.

Melanius Danny Mullarkey opened the scoring for Team Saint Lucia as they got their 2017 Windward Islands Football Association (WIFA) Men’s Tournament campaign underway with a win over St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday evening at the Kirani James Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

The second-half marker from the England-based defender, who has family from both Soufriere and central Castries, was the first of two for Saint Lucia. The second came through captain, Kurt Frederick, before the defending champions pulled one back to make the final score 2-1 in favour of Saint Lucia.

The team with the youngest squad in the five-team tournament is now in pole position, after hosts Grenada were held to a draw by Dominica. Barbados is set to get its campaign underway on Friday evening, when the second round of matches kicks off.

Mullarkey rejoins the national team after having made his debut in 2015 at the age of 23.

Speaking just before the team left for Grenada last Monday, he said his previous stint in national colours helped him grow as a professional, whilst he feels his increased professional experience can bring a lot to the national team.

“I had such a tremendous spell in the last national team fixtures, one being the Windward Islands Tournament, and the other being The World Cup Qualifiers. Playing in those games gave me a massive opportunity to showcase my strengths and review my weaknesses. Moreover, it allowed me to focus on what I contributed to the team.

“After the World Cup Qualifier in 2015, I gained beneficial exposure to another dimension of the world of football through negotiating contracts with Cork City FC in the Airtricity League of Ireland. Despite experiencing a short period of time training, the lessons I learnt were so essential to my progression, especially in their Champions League qualification matches.

“Through experiencing positions at a few football clubs in the U.K. such as Dumbarton FC, Daventry FC, and Hayes and Yeading FC, I am really excited to represent Saint Lucia – a place which I am always proud to call my own country. I am excited to be back and ready for the tournament. Being a high-scoring defender I am 100% confident that the team will get the best of me.”

image1In January 2017, the Free Kick Foundation hosted its first annual College Player Showcase.

The event promised young student-athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents, in the hopes of securing scholarships  to US universities.

The trials were well attended, resulting in 45 student-athletes  being selected for the showcase.

The event resulted in 20 scholarship offers being made to the students, including fourteen (14) offers to St. Lucia student-athletes and six (6) to Dominica student-athletes. This outcome, being the most successful of any showcase held on island, greatly exceeded expectations.

Free Kick Foundation has since been actively engaged in preparing the students for their transition to the USA. These are exciting times and FKF is honored to be a part of such a life-changing event.

“Our interest and investment in these students is not limited only to sporting achievements, but extends to the fulfillment of their absolute potential – including education, life skills, broadening of their horizons through travel and a diverse range of opportunities. “ said the CEO of FKF Aaron King.

He also added “ We believe that the US college experience will provide these students the expert coaching and exposure to competition that will help foster winning attitudes.”

At the press conference held last monday, each student-athlete was presented  with an official college t-shirt from the school that they will be attending this  August.

NBA players are making more money today than at any time in league history. But LeBron James still isn’t satisfied.

Warriors star Steph Curry agreed to terms on a five-year, $201 million “super max” contract at the start of free agency early Saturday morning. It is the richest deal of all time. James, though, believes Curry is underpaid, and he voiced his opinion on Twitter Saturday afternoon in response to a post from San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion.

In her tweet, Killion noted how the Warriors have grown in value from $450 million to $2.6 billion since owner Joe Lacob purchased the franchise in 2010. That rise has coincided with Curry’s two MVPs and two championships, and one could make the case that Curry is actually worth more than the $40.2 million per year he’s due to make, based on that increase in franchise value.

“So tell me again why there’s a cap on how much a player should get?? Don’t answer that,” James tweeted. “Steph should be getting 400M this summer 5yrs. #JMTs”

JMTs stands for “Just My Thoughts.”

James is the first vice president of the NBA Players’ Association. His good friend Chris Paul is the president of the Players’ Association. Both agreed to the terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, which dictates every policy detail when it comes to the salary cap and max contract figures. The newest version of the CBA went into effect Saturday. So in theory, James would have been better served making this argument at the negotiating table.

But the three-time NBA champion nonetheless makes an important point. Even with the gargantuan contracts and increasing salary cap — the result of lucrative television deals — some of the game’s elite players are still underpaid, missing out on money they are bringing in through their entertaining play. Fans are buying tickets to games and purchasing apparel because of the players, and they should ultimately see a proper share of that revenue.

However, the salary cap also functions as a mechanism to facilitate a fairer playing field among large and small market teams. Without a salary cap, as James is suggesting, teams that play in bigger markets will have the chance to outspend smaller market teams to a greater extent than they already do.

The current CBA will remain in place until at least 2022-23. We’ll see if James can make the changes he desires in the next round of negotiations.

West Indies collapsed to 48 all out in a 10-wicket defeat by South Africa as their Women’s World Cup campaign suffered a new low in Leicester on Sunday.

The reigning World Twenty20 champions, who’ve now lost all three of their group matches so far this tournament, posted the sixth lowest completed one-day international total in women’s cricket.

Chedean Nation, with 26, was the only West Indies batsman to make double figures as South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk became the first bowler, in either men’s or women’s international cricket, to take four wickets without conceding a run in her final figures.

But the real damage to the West Indies’ hopes was done by Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail, who reduced the Caribbean side to 16 for five.

Kapp took four for 14 and van Niekerk an astonishing four for none in 3.2 overs.

“It was quite surreal, if I could script it I would not have written it like that,” said van Niekerk. “We had our plans coming into the game and it worked to the tee.

“I’m really proud of the bowlers, especially my two opening bowlers, they were world-class.”

To make matters even worse for the West Indies, they dropped both South Africa openers off successive balls.

Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt needed no second invitation as they saw South Africa to victory in a mere 6.2 overs, with a match scheduled for 100 overs lasting just 31.4 in total.

The end of the match saw West Indies star batsman Deandra Dottin, out for a duck to Kapp, in tears.

“I think their bowling was very good, it’s a good bowling line-up, they have a lot of strong players. But from our side, we just needed to execute our skills much better,” said West Indies opener Hayley Matthews, out for four. “The wicket had a little grass on it, but the openers bowled really well today.”

West Indies’ total the lowest score at a World Cup since Denmark were bowled out for 47 by England in 1993, although Pakistan still hold the record after managing just 27 against Australia in 1997.

Antigua & Barbuda’s top cyclists dominated the OECS Cycling Championships on Sunday, claiming third, fourth and fifth places.

Antigua & Barbuda’s top cyclists battled the harsh weather in Dominica over the weekend and came out on top, claiming first, third, fourth and fifth places in the OECS Cycling Championships held there on Sunday.

Overseas-based rider and former national champion, Jyme Bridges Jr, successfully negotiated the “mountainous and wet” terrain to grab the number position and claim the top prize after a ride in 3:29:30.

Veteran Marvin Spencer just missed the second spot but grabbed a bronze medal in the third position, riding over the finish line in 3:04:49 just behind of St Lucia’s Andrew Norbert who finished in 3:00:20.

Another Antiguan rider, Jeffrey Kelsick grabbed fourth with 3:05:16 even after suffering a fall, while Emmanuel Gayral rode over the line in the fifth position in 3:09:24.

President of the Antigua & Barbuda Cycling Association (ABCA) Mervyn Gore, who was also in Dominica for the event, praised the athletes for the way they performed given the conditions.

“Everybody performed exceptionally well because at some point we were behind because it was a very mountainous [course]. We just crawled our way back and just picking off cyclists one at a time and that’s why we were able to sustain the positions of first, third, fourth and fifth,” he said.

“We were always confident that we would have done well but during the race things changed in terms of the rain and what we had planned didn’t pan out then everybody just had to adapt and find new strategies and new ways in reference to how we were going to tackle the race,” he added.

Antigua & Barbuda’s triumph did not come cheaply however, as veteran cyclist Robert Marsh suffered probably the worst collision of the race, leaving him with several injuries.

“We had some real serious crashes because the roads were wet since it was raining a lot. Jeffrey Kelsick fell first at a metal bridge and had to change his wheel and stuff like that. Emmanuel Gayral got a blown tyre and Robert Marsh, a police motorcycle ran into him head-on so he was eliminated from the race instantly,” Gore said.

Marsh received some treatment from a medical team present at the race while Gore hinted he was slated to receive stitches at the hospital.

The cyclists will now turn their attention to the John T Memorial race in Anguilla next week.

A teammate (left) is all smiles as he pats Kesrick Williams on the back after the latter dismissed India’s MS Dhoni during the fourth One-Day International match.

West Indies Head Coach Stuart Law has hailed Sunday’s sensational win over India, but cautioned it was just one step on a long road back for the embattled Caribbean side.

The Windies looked down down and out when they stumbled to 189 for nine off their 50 overs, batting first in the fourth One-Day International. But they rallied to bundle out the Indians for 178, and clinch an amazing, 11-run victory.

“I believe in these boys. I believe they have got the skill,” the Australian told reporters following the result at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

“We beat Pakistan a couple of weeks ago chasing down 300, and now we’ve defended a reasonably small total against India — two of the best teams in the world we’ve gone on to beat.

“I believe they’ve got the skill, I believe they’ve got the talent, if we just improve their work ethic. And they’ve got to play a different game than they’re used to. As soon as we start realising that and start working towards that, I think we can start making progress.”

He added: “Today is one step and it’s a big ladder for us, but today is one step closer to where we want to end up. It’s a lot of hard work and we are working hard, believe me.

“The people of the Caribbean probably don’t see us working as hard as we are and I just want to let them know that we are very pleased that we’ve put a win on the board today for everybody in the region.”

Entering the contest down 2-0 in the five-match series and trying to avoid yet another series defeat, West Indies produced yet another limp effort with the bat, as their batsmen succumbed to a series of soft dismissals.

Openers Kyle Hope and Evin Lewis top-scored with 35, but no other batsman passed 30 as the Windies innings declined dramatically from a decent position of 121 for two.

Law said while it was evident the batting still needed work, he was thrilled by the way the team had rallied, especially defending such a small target.

“We showed tremedous fight with the ball in hand out there today,” Law pointed out.

“Once again, our batting [was not up to scratch]. We got off to a good start but we didn’t quite capitalise. We desperately need one of the top six or couple of the top six to go on and get big scores to alleviate the pressure that we had at the end there.

“If we had 240, 250 on the board it would have made our job a lot easier. But credit to the boys, the way they fought in the field. I thought the fielding was outstanding; the pressure catching towards the end was great.

“I’m very happy, very proud but we’ve still got plenty of work to do. But we’re definitely going to enjoy this one.”

The final match of the series is set for Sabina Park in Jamiaca on Thursday.

It has been a challenging and demanding ride for the Association but efforts and different programs to introduce tennis to the outer districts is still ongoing.

Joel Martin Director of the United Through Sports (UTS) Organisation contacted the Tennis Association three years ago and the relationship has been productive and results oriented since then. UTS provides volunteer coaches to the Tennis Association to assist with the different programs.

The Programme has supported and introduced basketball, soccer and most recently American football to youth within the Caribbean islands through partnerships with sports celebrities and professionals such as: Dwyane Wade, NBA All-Star; Dwayne De Rosario (DeRo), Canadian footballer, and Darrelle Revis, NFL cornerback. 4-trevor-daniel-flow-trevor-daniel-football-development-programme_-martina-roth-hotel-manager-at-sandals-halcyonThe most recent donation of the ‘Stable 26 basketball socks’ to the programme will enable our youth in the islands of: Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and Turks & Caicos to be equipped in the gear worn by the basketball pros.

The socks feature medial and lateal silicone pads to eliminate negative space around the heel resulting in a better fit, better comfort, and better performance. The innovative technology locks the heel in place, enhancing the connection between your foot and your footwear thus optimizing the body’s stability. These socks provide multi-direction stability and targeted cushioning to optimize court performance.

Adam Landen, Account Manager of PTX Performance Products Inc, commented on why supporting the Sandals Foundation’s initiated Game Changer Programme was a perfect and natural progression to the company’s mission, “I am very excited about forging a relationship with Sandals Foundation. Here at PTX we are thrilled that we could make a difference in the lives of youth across the Caribbean with the contribution of our Stable26 athletic socks. It gives us great pleasure to know that our product will help the less fortunate feel more comfortable in their footwear.”

3-ron-du-morville-game-changer-basketball-for-the-future-team_-martina-roth-hotel-manager-at-sandals-halcyonHeidi Clarke, Director of Programmes at Sandals Foundation expressed her own thank you to the newest Game Changer partners, “We are now into the period of our third anniversary for our Game Changer Programme. We have been heartened by the successes of the initiative and the growing international support which has increased our ability to engage our youth through schools and the wider community through an avenue that they love and are excited about. We have watched our children develop holistically in ways when we started we only hoped we could achieve and we could only attribute the achievement of these goals to the support from companies such as PTX Performance Products. Partnerships are always necessary and allow you to double the impact that you achieve alone.”

In Saint Lucia, socks were officially handed over during a small ceremony held at the Kenneth “Wriggler” King Multipurpose Complex. Recipients were – Ron Du Morville, on behalf of Game Changer Basketball For the Future Team; Trevor Daniel, on behalf of Flow-Trevor Daniel Football Development Programme; and Sirsean Arlain, on behalf of Tigers InFLOW™.

These coaches were very appreciative in receiving the socks on behalf of their respective sporting disciplines. They expressed similar sentiments, all recognising the value of this partnership, and further, that the children and young adults could only stand to benefit from this unexpected gift from the Sandals Foundation.

Ron Du Morville, in a rare show of emotion, said “this will go a long way to motivating our boys.” Trevor Daniel, in his remarks, highlighted that “these socks will reduce injury to the footballers. Deandra Dottin stroke 38 runs.

West Indies Women yesterday overpowered Sri Lanka Women by 47 runs to end their wretched unbeaten run at the ICC Women’s World Cup and begin their quest to salvage some pride from an otherwise depressing campaign.

With four defeats in their previous outings, the Caribbean side turned the page on the disappointing run by posting their best total of the tournament with 229 for nine off 50 overs and then successfully defending it, holding the Sri Lankans 182 off 48 overs.

While the victory handed the Windies their first points of the tournament with two games remaining, it kept Sri Lanka as one of two winless sides along with the bottom-placed Pakistan Women.

Sent in at Derbyshire County Ground, veteran Merissa Aguilleira top-scored with an unbeaten 46, while Deandra Dottin stroked 38 and Kyshona Knight and Hayley Matthews got 26 apiece.

Seamer Sripali Weerakkody claimed three for 38, while pacer Ama Kanchana (2-50) and left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera (2-56) finished with two wickets apiece.

Not for the first time, 19-year-old opener Matthews got a start, hitting three fours in a breezy 32-ball knock as she added 34 for the first wicket with Kycia Knight who made 19.

However, she missed a pull at Weerakkody and was lbw in the eighth over and West Indies suffered a huge blow 10 balls later when captain Stafanie Taylor was taken behind off the same bowler for just four, at 42 for two.

Chedean Nation made 20 off 38, posting 33 for the third wicket with Kycia Knight but the partnership required 61 and put a drag on the innings.

The right-handed Nation perished in the 20th over, edging a loose drive at Weerakkody behind and Kycia Knight’s 53-ball labour ended in the 25th over when she bungled a sweep and was lbw to off-spinner Shashikala Siriwardene at 102 for four.

Dottin dazzled in her first significant innings of the tournament, facing just 25 deliveries and striking seven delightful boundaries all around the ground.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers were just about out of ideas when Dottin attempted a reverse paddle to a full length ball and was palpably lbw to Ranaweera in the 28th over at 124 for four.

From there on, Aguilleira managed the innings well for the Windies in a knock that lasted 59 balls and included two fours. She started slowly but then picked up the tempo, adding 37 for the sixth wicket with Kyshona Knight and 31 for the seventh wicket with Shanel Daley (21).

Kyshona Knight lived a charmed life, surviving a run out, a stumping and a caught and bowled chance before finally going bowled in the 39th over missing a heave at Ranaweera, after facing 49 deliveries and striking three fours.

Daley counted a four and a six in a busy 22-ball knock before holding out in the deep off Kanchana.

Sri Lanka, in reply, were then hurt by Player-of-the-Match Anisa Mohammed who claimed three for 39 while spinners Shanel Daley (2-30) and Afy Fletcher (2-38) supported with two wickets apiece.

Shashikala Siriwardene top-scored with 33, Prasadani Weerakkody chipped in with 30 while Chamari Jayangani got 26.

Off-spinner Taylor, taking the new ball, got the breakthrough when she had Hasini Perera well caught at the wicket by Aguilleira for four in the fifth over. And four balls later in the next over, off-spinner Matthews bowled Nipuni Hansika for nine, after getting one to drift and beat the left-hander’s drive.

Siriwardene and Jayangani combined to bolster the Sri Lankan innings, frustrating the Windies in a stand of 61 for the third wicket.

While the right-handed Siriwardene faced 67 balls and struck five fours, her left-handed partner counted two fours and faced 50 balls.

When Jayangani was brilliantly stumped off Mohammed in the 25th over, three wickets tumbled for four runs in the space of 14 balls as Sri Lanka slumped to 88 for five in the 27th over.

Prasadani Weerakkody and Oshadi Ranasinghe held up the Windies advance with a 42-run sixth wicket stand but once the partnership was broken, the last five wickets went down for 52 runs.
