2014 Veterans Football Tournament kicks off

PRESS RELEASE - The 2014 Veterans Football Tournament organized by Veterans in Sports Inc. and Caribbean Alliance Insurance is set to kick off this weekend at the Soufriere Mini Stadium.

All sixteen teams participating in this year’s tournament are expected to be at the Soufriere Mini Stadium Saturday afternoon from 3.00 0’ clock for the march pass of teams and opening of the tournament.

The opening of the tournament will feature remarks from tournament organizers, sponsors and other well wishers.

Three matches are down to be played on Saturday’s opening day of the tournament after the official opening at the Soufriere mini stadium.

The matches scheduled are:

Lancers vs Dennery All Blacks – First game

Gros Islet Veterans vs Vieux Fort South- Second game

Anse La Raye vs Desruisseaux- who are the only new team in the tournament this year.- Third game.

A double header is also scheduled for Sunday at the Soufriere Mini Stadium.

From 4.00 p.m. –Defending champions VSADC takes on Congorians and from 6.00 p.m. Laborie Veterans takes on Soufriere Veterans.

The matches which are being played primarily on weekends continue next weekend at the Gros Islet playing field.

The venues to be used for this year’s tournament are the Soufriere Mini Stadium, Gros Islet Playing Field and the Marchand Grounds.

The 16 teams participating in this year’s competition have been placed into four groups of four where they will play on a round robin basis in the groups with the top two from the group play advancing to the quarter finals where the matches will be played on a knockout basis.

The winning team this year will receive $5000 thousand dollars in cash and the Caribbean Alliance trophy.

There is an added incentive this year for the winning team as the winning team will get a chance to go to Barbados to represent ST.Lucia at the Wanders Masters Football Festival in June   of 2015.

There will also be lots of other prizes for the outstanding individuals and teams during the competition.

The Groups for the tournament are as follows:

Group A                   Group B

VSADC – Vieux Fort South

Comgorians – Gros Islet Veterans

Caricom Masters – Prophets and Kings

Micoud Veterans – Mabouya Veterans

 

Group   C                 Group D

Anse La Raye – Laborie Veterans

All Blacks –Dennery  – Behind The College All Stars

Desruisseaux – Nyahbinghi

Lancers FC  – Soufriere Veterans

The Tournament is for players 40 years of age and over and the cutoff date for any player to be 40 years old is   October 31st 2014.
