unnamed21Saint Lucia’s Olympic hopeful, Makeba Alcide, warmed up for her next Heptathlon with competition over the weekend in two of her events.

The 26-year-old cleared 5.84m in Long Jump and threw 35.06m in Javelin Throw, proclaiming her readiness to attack the qualifying mark for Rio 2016, which would also represent a new National Record for Saint Lucia, and a new record for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

“I’m leaving the track all in good spirits and great confidence,” she said. The St Joseph’s Convent alumna, who trains at the Altis high performance centre in Phoenix, Arizona, declared that she is hoping to be at or near her best in several of the seven events she will be undertaking next week in California. She also called on her fellow countrymen and other supporters to rally behind her.

“I am thankful for my training partners and coach,” said Makeba. “I’m in great shape, in good health, and ready for war. God is good. I am definitely happy with my results and the workout after. Keep me in your prayers as I continue on this road to Rio.

“Right now it’s about just fixing the little bugs and niggles and sharpening up until my main meet. I’m healthy and feeling good. Probably the most technical I have been in my entire life. Looking forward to this meet to get back into the swing of things.”

Makeba’s personal bests in Long Jump, Javelin Throw, 800m, and Heptathlon are 6.15m, 37.37, 2:12.05, and 6050. She is anticipating matching or surpassing her marks in the individual events, as well as improving her 100m Hurdles and Shot put performances. She needs to get to 6200 to make the Olympics. That would place her in the world’s top 10.

unnamedPRESS RELEASE – A team of Jet Ski enthusiasts from Martinique spent the past week-end in Saint Lucia exploring logistical arrangements for Saint Lucia’s possible involvement in an international Jet Ski race in 2017.

Martinique recently hosted the first round of Jetracer World Championship IJSBA, an international Jet race competition. The International Jet Sports Boating Association is the worldwide sanctioning body for personal watercraft competitive racing. Team 972 from Martinique comprising 17 Jet Skis visited Saint Lucia in response to an invitation from the Consul General in Martinique Yasmine Walcott for discussions and first-hand experience of Saint Lucia as a likely host for next year’s International Jet Ski race in Martinique.

The proposal is for the race to start in Martinique and culminate in Saint Lucia; the first time an international Jet Ski race will start in one country and end in another.

Edson Eugene of Team 972 [Martinique’s area code] says this trial run brought a total of over 40 persons to Saint Lucia including three boats with security, emergency and other logistical personnel.

He said the international Jet Ski race in Martinique this year attracted over 50 participants from the United States, Russia, Canada, Kuwait, Qatar, Belgium, Peru, the United Kingdom, Italy, China, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and France. The hope is that Saint Lucia Jet Ski Pilots will participate in the 2017 international race.

Team 972 is expected to provide training and race orientation to the Saint Lucian Jet Ski pilots.

The Tennessee Tech women’s track & field team finished eighth at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Tennessee State University on the Ed temple Track last weekend. One of the key contributors, despite not winning any individual medals, was Saint Lucia’s Sharnique Leonce.

Eastern Illinois won the team title with 163 points, ahead of host Tennessee State (144.5). Austin Peay (81) was third, followed by Southeast Missouri (79), SIUE (72), Jacksonville State and Murray State (65), and Tech (59.5), the Golden Eagles beating out perennial power Eastern Kentucky (52), as well as Belmont (32) and Morehead State (5).

Sharnique was certainly busy over the weekend. She topped the Golden Eagles with a ninth-place finish in the 100m, missing by one place a spot in the finals with a time (12.20) that was just off her personal best (12.19). Morgan O’Neal had a PR of 12.53 with an 18th place showing, while Brittany McGee’s 12.74 for 22nd was also a PR.

Photos by Katherine Seghers, TSU Sports Information.

Leonce posted personal-best performances in three of the four events in the Heptathlon Friday, but a fall during the 100m hurdles put her at a disadvantage. She was last in the event in 21.43 seconds, earning just 194 points. She bounced back to win two of the next three events, on the opening day.

In the High Jump, Sharnique went 1.72m to lead that event and earn 879 points. Her height was just a quarter inch off the school record. She also won the 200m dash in 24.53 seconds, her second PR which gave her 930 points. Her third PR came in the Shot Put with a toss of 9.87m for 521 points.

Eighth after her first four events, Sharnique picked up on the second day. In Long Jump, she cleared 5.27m for 634 points. She threw the javelin 27.01m for 420 points. And she ran the 800m in 2:33.58 for 649, ending sixth overall with a total of 4227. A hurdles performance even close to her PR would have given her the title, set a new school record, and taken her past 5000 points for the first time.

Sharnique also scored points in both relays, each of which placed third.

The couple on Thursday welcomed the birth of their first child.

IRIEFM – West Indies batting star Chris Gayle could be travelling down the road of controversy and is facing fresh allegations of sexism after making a series of controversial remarks to a female journalist.

The hard hitting opener, who was criticised for asking female Australian reporter Mel McLaughlin out on a date during a live television interview earlier this year, was speaking to Charlotte Edwardes for an article published in the Times Magazine on Saturday.

According to the article, Gayle made suggestive remarks and asked the journalist about personal matters.

At one point in the interview Gayle – who recently celebrated the arrival of a baby girl called Blush with his partner Tash – tells Edwardes that he has ‘a very, very big bat, the biggest in the wooooorld’.

He then added, “You think you could lift it? You’d need two hand,” reports The Daily Mail.

According to the article, Gayle asks Edwardes how many black men she has ‘had’ and wants to know if she has ever had a threesome. ‘I bet you have. 14 medals for Saint Lucia at Caribbean Under-16 Track and Field Championships

Team Saint Lucia

Team Saint Lucia enjoyed a strong performance at the inaugural Caribbean Under-16 Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Fort de France, Martinique.

The meet did not quite live up to the name, with athletes from just six territories competing – Martinique, Saint Lucia, Dominica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Haiti. But the outing provided a useful measuring stick for the young Saint Lucians, who will have their eyes on further representation at various levels in years to come.

Well over 100 athletes contended not only with each other, but with the elements, an atmospheric trough forcing a number of events to take place despite heavy rains. With a team of 14, Team Saint Lucia captured 14 medals, including five gold, with five athletes taking at least two medals.

Most of the youngsters turned in career-best performances, in spite of the weather, with several of the track events reduced to A and B finals, as opposed to having the athletes run rounds beneath the downpour.

Sanjay Jean was a double gold medallist, winning the boys 200m and 400m. In the half-lap, Sanjay ran 23.84 seconds, into a light wind of -0.9 metres per second. He was followed home by fellow countryman, Jlan Dantes, in 24.07 seconds, and Jean-Christophe Duranty of Martinique in 24.10. In the 400m, Sanjay stopped the clock at 51.76 seconds, ahead of Samuel Nadeau (55.84) of Martinique, and Dachelor Miracle (56.47) of Haiti. Jlan and Sanjay also won silver in the boys 4x100m.

Anfrea Gittens ran 3:13.17 to win the 1000m girls. Thomyka Valcent was just fifth in that race, but ran 59.56 to win the 400m, in which race Nysa Pierre was second. Garvin Inglis won the 1000m in 2:48.29, with teammate Jayeed Norbal taking bronze in 2:49.73.

Zoe Dorville was a double silver medallist. She ran 12.59 into a -1.2 m/s headwind for second place in the 100m, with teammate Deray Desir claiming bronze in 12.71. Zoe was also just two hundredths of a second behind the gold medallist in the 200m, coming in at 25.68 seconds.

There was silver as well for Tyler Toussaint in the boys 100m (11.47 seconds) and Antonio Maynard in the boys Long Jump (6.06m). Tyler and Antonio were on the silver medal boys 4x100m team as well. But for a disqualification in the girls 4x100m, where Team Saint Lucia crossed the line in third, every one of the 14 athletes would have had at least one medal.

Among those looking on at the Games were National Record holders and Olympic hopefuls Sandisha Antoine (women’s Triple Jump) and Albert Reynolds (men’s Javelin Throw). The team was also visited at their hotel by Olympian and multiple National Record holder, Zepherinus Joseph (men’s Marathon).

At least three of these teenagers will be available to selectors for the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games, which will be hosted by the British Virgin Islands in July.

PRESS RELEASE – Cricket in the West Indies looks set to continue its winning ways with the news that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has inked an exciting new agreement with Digicel.

With rising stars like Carlos Brathwaite, Hayley Matthews and Shimron Hetmyer having made a name for themselves on the global stage with their stunning world-beating performances at the World Championships, the next four years of partnership between Digicel and the WICB look brighter than ever.

As the biggest supporter of cricket across the region for the last 12 years, this time around Digicel will be helping to grow the already massive appeal of the game by sponsoring the women’s and U19s teams – in addition to the men’s senior team.

Another major part of Digicel’s new commitment to West Indies Cricket will be the coaching clinics that will be developed across the Caribbean to find and nurture the cricket stars of the future – as well as a strong mix of branding and advertising at home games, activations, promotional opportunities and more access to the teams. And, for the first time ever, the Digicel logo will also have a presence on all West Indies team’s jerseys at ICC events.

Digicel’s commitment will help the strategic growth of the WICB’s business and provide greater engagement for fans and benefits to Digicel customers. This includes the support of the long form of the game, and the future of Test Cricket, and this will play out with the broadcasting of the Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional 4-Day Competition set to start later this year.

John Delves, Chief Commercial Officer at Digicel Group, comments; “Our aim with all of our community and sponsorship initiatives is to support our customers and the things that they love and identify with most – and one of those things is cricket.  The game of cricket has a long and fascinating history in the Caribbean uniting the people of the islands and the islands themselves through a shared passion and a competitive thrill.”

He continues; “The stunning recent successes of the men, women’s and U19s teams have once again broadened the appeal of the game and excited new audiences. We are delighted to be involved now with all of the WICB teams and particularly pleased to be partnering on the coaching clinics which will help to nurture future champions from the Caribbean.”

Michael Muirhead, Chief Executive Officer at the WICB, says; “As part of the WICB’s plan to expand its commercial business, a key component of this strategy was the renewal of the relationship with our long term and valued team sponsor. The new partnership meets a number of our strategic commercial goals, and we are delighted to be continuing our long association with Digicel. Over the past 12 years, Digicel has demonstrated its love of the game of cricket and has helped to bring new excitement to our passionate fans. This new era sees an expanded level of support for all of our teams and a focus on growing the next wave of Caribbean cricket champions in all formats.”

“In addition, our commercial agency, Pitch International, has been key to this renewal of this new look partnership.”

INEWS GUYANA – With Chris Gayle struggling to set aside an array of controversies surrounding him, Big Bash League club Melbourne Renegades have decided to not re-sign the West Indies controversial batsman for the T20 tournament’s next season.

“We’ll unveil our international signings soon and Chris isn’t part of those plans,” Renegades chief executive Stuart Coventry was quoted saying by cricket.com.au.

Gayle’s chances of playing in the sixth edition of the BBL now seem highly unlikely with the other seven clubs either having already locked in imports or looking elsewhere for tactical reasons.

This development comes a day after Gayle launched a scathing attack on former cricketers Chris Rogers, Ian Chappell and England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff in his forthcoming autobiography ‘Six Machine: I Don’t Like Cricket… I Love It’.

Earlier this year, Gayle was fined US$7,500 and was censured heavily by these former cricketers over the big-hitting batsman’s infamous comments to a female journalist during last year’s BBL. He was seen asking the reporter out on a date during a broadcast interview before adding the ‘Don’t blush baby’ remark.
