Scheper and Spencer

Saint Lucia’s two-member team to the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics left the United States on Monday to travel to Beijing, China, for what is expected to be the biggest showcase ever for global track and field, race walking and road running.

Saint Lucia is being represented by high jumpers Levern Spencer and Jeannelle Scheper, aged 31 and 20 (21 in November). Levern is a veteran campaigner, who is to date the only Saint Lucian ever to win medals at the world level.

In 2015, both ladies have made their share of history. Jeannelle became the first athlete ever from Saint Lucia to win an NCAA Division 1 title. Levern won the nation’s first-ever Pan American Games gold, then repeated as NACAC champion.

They are entered alongside 28 other athletes from 21 countries. Jeannelle’s best height for the year, 1.97m, ranks her sixth. Levern’s best, 1.94, puts her joint 13th. Both will be entered in the qualifying rounds on the 27th, in hopes of making it to the finals on the 29th.

According to a release from the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA), the organisation “wishes it’s [sic] delegation travelling to the IAAF 2015 World Championships in China all the best.”

Saint Lucia finished fourth at the Caribbean Football Union’s inaugural Under-15 Boys Championship, which concluded on Sunday evening in Sint Maarten.

Saint Lucia had opened the tournament against Cayman Islands, losing 2-0. The rematch, to decide third place in the competition, would prove a much closer contest.

Kareem Foster scored eight minutes in for the Caymanians. But Saint Lucia never lost their composure, and Riquelme Sylvester hit an equaliser in the 35th minute.

The scores remained knotted until the final whistle, with the game going to penalties. Saint Lucia missed their first one, and the Caymans missed the fifth, which would have sealed victory. In sudden death, though, Saint Lucia missed again, and the Caymans hit to win 5-4.

The Saint Lucian lads can exit the tournament with their heads held high, however. In six matches, they earned three wins and aside from the penalty loss, their other two setbacks were by a combined three goals.

In total, Saint Lucia scored 18 goals in six matches. Riquelme Sylvester scored five in all, as did Linus Clovis. They also allowed just five goals, recording clean sheets in each of their three victories.

Saint Lucia’s semifinal opponents, Curacao, went on to win the title. They had beaten Saint Lucia 2-1, but conquered Dominican Republic 4-2 in the final.
