Scheper

Jeannelle Scheper started jumping after nearly everyone else was done, and she matched her fourth-best clearance ever.

Saint Lucia’s first qualifier for the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, Scheper was competing for her University of South Carolina Gamecocks at the Bill Carson Invitational in Greenville, and she was riding a hot streak.

Not yet 21, the USC senior set a new career-best mark of 1.95m last weekend at Florida Relays. On that occasion, the mathematics major came within an inch of the Saint Lucia national record for women’s high jump. That mark just happens to be the record for the English-speaking Caribbean as well.

Scheper also had the top two best heights in Division 1 of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) coming into this weekend, ahead of 2014 NCAA champion Leontia Kallenou of Georgia. Those heights, 1.95m and 1.91m, were her best and third-best marks of all time.

And now the St Joseph’s Convent alumna owns three of the top four heights for the season, after clearing 1.90 at East Carolina University in Greenville (confusing located in North Carolina).

Scheper won the high jump for the fourth consecutive weekend, besting teammate Nakita Gray by six inches.

The Commonwealth Games fourth-place finisher from Saint Lucia had a first-time clearance at 1.75, the last height Gray cleared. She moved the bar to 1.80m and cleared that on her second try. And then she cleared 1.90m on her third trial. She did not attempt a further bar.

Scheper was one of 14 winners for South Carolina as the Gamecocks earned the team title on Saturday. It was the women’s first team victory of the season. The NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships are 10-13 June in Oregon. No Saint Lucian has ever won an NCAA Division 1 title.

Curacao rugby

Saint Lucia is left searching for answers and Curaçao have retained pole position in the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) South Zone Cup League.

Saint Lucia, already having lost 22-14 to the British Virgin Islands and 16-8 to St Vincent and the Grenadines at home earlier this year, went down 36-19 in Bonam, Willemstad.

Curaçao had only played one match in this zone, being held to a 24-24 draw by St Vincent and the Grenadines. BVI had also played just one match, beating Saint Lucia at home, so they must now face both Curaçao abd SVG.

For now, 2014 group winners Curaçao have the advantage, with a point differential of 17, as compared to SVG and BVI, both with a differential of eight.

Saint Lucia, on the other hand, winless from their three fixtures, are minus 31. Saturday’s game was actually the highest scoring of the three for the Zandolis, but also the game in which they gave up the most points.

In the 2014 NACRA South Cup, Saint Lucia lost to Curaçao 56-7 in Willemstad, but beat the BVI 29-18 in Tortola, and SVG 26-22 at home.

Sharnique Leonce

Sharnique Leonce had three event wins, five career-best marks and set a new school record en route to her best-ever points total in heptathlon.

The 21-year-old (22 in October) Iowa Western Community College sophomore contested the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic and placed third with 4416 points.

The Ciceron Secondary alumna opened the competition with a career-best 14.37 (927 points) in the 100m hurdles, placing second but breaking Khadesha James’ one-year-old record of 14.64 for IWCC.

She would go on to win the high jump (818) with a height of 1.67m, another career-best and another new school record for that event. That matched her indoor best for the event.

In shot put, she could manage only 8.45m (428), still in search of double figures in that event, as she placed 10th.

Leonce closed out the 200m on the opening portion of the heptathlon with a win in a personal-best 25.19 seconds (869).

On the second portion, Sharnique opened with a 5.45m long jump, a new outdoor PB for her, although she has gone 5.79 indoors (686).

As much as Leonce has improved and excelled in the sprints and jumps, she has not shown the same development in throws. She set a javelin throw PB at Wichita, but it was a mere 27.11 (422), good only for eighth best.

In the 800m, a time under three minutes would have seen Sharnique going second, but her 10th-place 3:11.48 (266) left her in third.

Sharniqe’s 4416 is the third best mark in Division 1 of the National Junior College Athletics Association.

Kamala Mangal warms up as teammates look on.

A “confident, determined and fighting” Saint Lucia team pulled out all the stops to beat Dominica 25-18 on Sunday evening, the second day of the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Under 16 Netball Championship.

Playing at the Vigie Sports Complex in Castries, the home team led at the end of every quarter against the spirited and athletic Dominicans. Saint Lucia were up 12-9 at halftime and pulled away from there.

Canaries centre Janelle Mathurin and the defensive cohort (led by 12-year-old Megan Nestor, also of Canaries, and captain Bianca Alfred of Babonneau) were outstanding for Saint Lucia. Kamala Mangal from Marc converted 22 of her 27 attempts on goal, whilst Tanny William of Desruisseaux made three fo her five shots.

Goal Attack Kayla Wilson for Dominica made 10 from 17, Celena Langais 4-5, and substitute shoot Shanice Henry 4-10.

According to one observer, “the Dominicans put on a strong fight, but were cleverly outmatched by the Saint Lucians, with skilful, faster down the line passes and ball play and encouraged by a home grown crowd.”

This win, combined with the other results on Sunday, put Saint Lucia in pole position. St Vincent and the Grenadines played their first game and won 22-14 over Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados beat Dominica on the opening night and had Sunday off. Bermuda beat Grenada 27-18.

Monday evening, Saint Lucia plays St Vincent and the Grenadines in a top-of-the-table clash at the Vigie Sports Complex.

Team Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia’s latest titanic encounter at the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Under-16 tournament was just about as tight as you can get.

It a bit of a grudge match, Saint Lucia having lost to SVG last year, and having lost again at the Windward Islands School Games. But even without that recent history, matches between teams from these neighbouring islands, in any sport, are always hard-fought.

Saint Lucia had played unbeaten at home over the course of the first two days. SVG had won its opener, but lost on Monday morning to another sub-regional rival, Grenada, whom Saint Lucia had beaten on Sunday.

The crowd was out in full force and in full voice at the Vigie sports complex on Monday night. They cheered lustily as Saint Lucia’s Kamala Mangal scored the opening goal.

Team SVG.

But Kamala’s output was matched shot for shot by the Vincentians. At the end of the first period, scores were locked at 6-6. At halftime, they were 11-11. With three quarters gone, it was 16-16.

The crowd were on the edge of their seats as the seconds ticked down, the scoreboard showing 22-22. But with a tick remaining on the clock, Team SVG hit a buzzer beater to silence and deflate the home supporters.

It was Saint Lucia’s first loss, but the tournament remains evenly poised. Only Barbados, who trounced Grenada 21-12, remain undefeated. Saint Lucia get to challenge that record on Tuesday night.

“We have resurfaced playing fields, we have installed lights, and only last week, we commenced a new program in collaboration with the National Lotteries Association to construct community pavilions,” he added.

Saint Lucia in precarious position in Under-16 netball

$

0

On the penultimate night of the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Under-16 tournament, only Barbados would would have been entirely confident of their position, leading the tournament with a perfect 20 points from four games played.

They consolidated that position and sealed the 2015 title on Wednesday night at the Vigie Sports Complex, beating Trinidad and Tobago 25-11. TTO  is left on eight points, two ahead of last-place Bermuda, with Barbados on an unassailable 25.

Home team Saint Lucia, with two wins and two losses, came into Wednesday night’s fixture against Windward Islands rivals Grenada in fourth place. Grenada, with two wins, a draw and two losses, were three points ahead of Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia’s lasses enjoyed the highest shooting accuracy going into the night before the last, hitting on 74.40% of their shots on goal, followed by Grenada at 69.44%, Dominica 66.12%, St Vincent and the Grenadines 65.43% and Trinidad and Tobago 64.50%.

With Bermuda taking the night off, and Barbados trouncing Trinidad and Tobago, the final two games of the evening were between the four Windward Islands territories, the last games between them in what could be considered a mini-league.

Dominica, who have been playing exceptionally spirited netball, virtually trying to run their opponents off the court, got a 25-20 win over SVG, with Celena Langalais missing just one of her 20 shots on goal. They move up to 15 points, with SVG on 17.

Saint Lucia and Grenada, though, was always going to be a nail-biter. Grenada led by one after the first quarter, and at halftime it was all knotted up at 11. But Grenada began to pull away in the third, and eventually led Saint Lucia 25-20.

With the minutes ticking away, and the home crowd behind them, Saint Lucia mounted a furious comeback, narrowing the deficit to just one point, with seconds remaining and memories of the one-point loss to SVG fresh in their minds.

Saint Lucia pressed for the equaliser in the dying seconds, only for Grenada to force the turnover and score an insurance goal at the buzzer, winning 26-24 to end the championship with 20 points, going past SVG into second place in the standings.

Kamala Mangal, Saint Lucia’s goal shoot, converted 13 of her 18 attempts.

Saint Lucia, earned a solitary point from the loss and are now in fifth place with 13 points going into the final night of the competition. Tonight, they play Trinidad and Tobago, with a chance to move as high as third with a win, but possibly as low as sixth with a loss.

Dominica, depending on the outcome of their game against Bermuda, could be between joint second and fifth. Barbados’ only remaining interest will be to finish the competition unbeaten, and they will face St Vincent and the Grenadines.

PRESS RELEASE - 2015 did see the introduction of the Women’s component to the revived Windward Island Football Association (WIFA) Championship as promised by the Presidents when they met earlier in the year in SVG; and it was indeed a successful and entertaining one.

The Championship held from April 05th to 12th and played at the Victoria Park; saw host nation St. Vincent and the Grenadines emerging as champions.

After the opening ceremony on Tuesday 07th, St. Lucia and Grenada got things started and the game ended in a two (2) all draw with Ellaisa Marquis of St. Lucia scoring a brace and Sherrice Hood and Ariba Collins with one goal each from Grenada.

Game two (2) of day one saw SVG or “Lady Heat” defeating Dominica by one goal to nil. Overseas based player Arima Franklyn, or Kandis as she is known scored the only goal of the night.

On Thursday 09th, Dominica and Grenada played to a one all draw, with goals by Roniesha Frank of Grenada and Alijah Titre of Dominica scoring. In the second encounter of the night, SVG just needed a victory to secure the title but were held to a two all draw by Grenada, leaving everything to play for on the final day between all of the four Windward Islands teams.

Dominica took St. Lucia to the gallows on the final day of games as they thrashed them by five (5) goals to nil. Michlyn Morgan, Muryah Esprit, Kayshanda Alexander, Britney Stoute and Alijah Titre all scored for Dominica.

No matter the outcome in the final game of the Championship, Dominica cupped the second position. Lady Heat sealed the deal against Grenada with a one nil win over neighboring island. The goal was scored by substitute Darie-Ann “Sugars” Duncan in the 75th minute of play after what was described as an entertaining and competitive game as both teams fought hard for victory.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines got most of the awards with Best Goal Keeper being Annesta Richards; Best Defender and MVP of the tournament Akiria Samuel and the Most Disciplined Team. EllaisaMarquis was awarded the Best Midfielder of the Championship and was also joint top scorer with Alijah Titre of Dominica.

The Windward Islands Football Association Women’s Committee chairperson Ms. Yoland London is pleased that the championship fulfilled its objective, and expressed gratitude to her colleagues from the other participating Islands as well as her local colleagues. The tournament was made possible by FLOW.

The tournament moves to Dominica in 2016.

The championships featured teams from the region, including Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and Anguilla to name a few.

The tournament contained the junior category of both boys and girls 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under and 18 and under along with the Adult categories of men open and women singles, men and women doubles and men and women mixed doubles.

After a long week of tennis matches the championship climaxed with a prize giving ceremony which highlighted the outstanding players during the tournament.

“Digicel prides itself on associating its brand with the extraordinary in our St. Lucian people.  Digicel continues to be an advocate for youth development not only through education but also in the area of sports.  Going way back to the support of Stacey Roheman who is performing exceptionally well in the sport of tennis to Darren Sammy and Johnson Charles in the sport of cricket and the newly acquired Sharks Swim Team, demonstrates Digicel’ s commitment to youth and sports development in St Lucia.  Providing an opportunity for the young persons to gain experience in a competitive atmosphere is always a step in the right direction for further development” Commented Fiona Smith Marketing and Communications Executive

One of the largest crowds to date turned out for the match, with supporters of both sides rooting for their respective teams. At the forty minute mark, the teams were tied at 3-3.

They battled on into overtime, with players on both teams displaying some deft football skills and the crowd going wild as the game went down to the wire.

By the end of the 10 minutes of overtime, LIME and Ministry of Education were still neck-and-neck, now at 4-4 and were forced to settle for a penalty shootout.

At the end of it the 4G Boys emerged victorious with 1 penalty ahead of their challengers, 4-3.

Through it all, the Ministry of Education team put on a great performance but there was no mistaking the tenacity and power of the 4G Boys who held their own and ultimately sealed their victory with some excellent team work.

This is their third successive win in the tournament. In previous games they defeated Lazy Lagoon 4-3 and 1st National Bank also 4-3. Needless to say the 4G Boys came in for high praise from their supporters, especially their colleagues at LIME.

The team has been playing exceptionally well and we remain proud of their performance. We say a big thank you to each player as they continue to give their all to represent every one of us at LIME,” Ms Pitt added.

She also commended Chamber of Commerce for this initiative and the other teams for their efforts and for the “incredible camaraderie” amongst the players.
