It can get cold in the Greater Boston area. So it makes sense that the New England Patriots Cheerleaders would have fallen in love with the tropical paradise of Saint Lucia.

The ladies who help galvanise the 2019 NFL champions were last on island in 2013, shooting for their 2014 swimsuit calendar. The Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders have also shot in Saint Lucia.

Six years later, the Pats cheerleader squad will be back in Fair Helen. The award-winning Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa will play host to the team in July, as they shoot their 2019-20 fitness calendar.

In addition to shooting their fitness calendar and videos over the course of the week, the Patriots Cheerleaders will be greeting fans, signing autographs, performing routines, and participating in a variety of fun activities with the guests.

The ladies will also support Coconut Bay’s local philanthropic work including a visit to the St. Jude Hospital Pediatric Ward.

Patriots Director of Cheerleading, Tracy Sormanti, said: “Saint Lucia is a tropical paradise. From the world-famous Pitons and drive-in volcano to the beautiful greenery and the ocean with its incredible colors, the island provided the perfect canvas for our last shoot and we’re extremely excited to return and once again experience its natural beauty and the warm hospitality of the locals.”

(JAMAICA GLEANER) — South Africa’s national women’s football team will, for the first time, earn the same amount of bonuses as their male counterparts when they compete at the FIFA World Cup next month.

The decision, which was announced by the head of the South Africa Football Association Danny Jordan, comes amid growing demands by female football players that they receive equal pay as their male counterparts.

Until now, members of South Africa’s senior men’s teams have always earned more in bonuses during qualifiers or at major tournaments while their female counterparts have received considerably less.

“This will go a long way towards closing the pay gap between the men and women footballers in this country and it is a happy day for South African football‚” Jordan was quoted as saying.

Janine van Wyk, captain of the team dubbed “Banyana Banyana”, was happy with the move.

“It is truly amazing as you know that we have been fighting for equality in sport for a long time‚” she said.

According to reports, members of the women’s team will each receive US$22,000 if South Africa progress to the second round of the Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off on June 7 in France.

BREAKING NEWS: Saint Lucia sprint sensation Julien Alfred shuts down for 2019

A marvelous season for Saint Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred is now at an end. Alfred, 18 this year, is a freshman student-athlete at the University of Texas.

In recent months, she has reset national records for the 60m, 100m, and 200m. Many would have been looking forward to Saint Lucia’s reigning Junior Sportswoman of the Year representing the nation on the international stage this summer and beyond.

Unfortunately, the Youth Olympic Games silver medallist and Commonwealth Youth Games champion has packed in her spikes after sustaining a hamstring injury.

Scheduled to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, California this week, she pulled out of the first round of the 200m.

“My coach said he’s going to ensure that I’m healthy for next year,” she said, speaking of UT head coach, Edrick Floréal.

Alfred will reflect on the best season ever for a Saint Lucian sprinter of any age, in terms of performance. The St. Catherine High School (Jamaica) and Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary (Saint Lucia) alumna set new national records of 22.90 and 11.39 seconds in the 200m and 100m, respectively. Despite the absence of medals and titles, it could be enough to win Junior Sportswoman of the Year once more.

The Texas coaching staff would have had some conversation with the Saint Lucia Athletics Association regarding Alfred’s intended programme for the rest of 2019.

She would certainly have been gearing up for the Pan American U20 Athletics Championships in San José, Costa Rica, in July. She would also have been in the mix for the Pan Am Senior Championships in Lima, Peru, and IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Happy 80th birthday Reds!

$

Joseph `Reds’ Perreira Photo credit: St. Lucia Star newspaper

Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira turned 80 on May 20th and deserves more than congratulatory words for this milestone. Reds came to Saint Lucia from his native Guyana in 1984 to head the OECS Sports Desk and still follows sports with great passion even after his 12-year role ended.

Reds says he is happy to celebrate 80 years of life, but not happy with the pace of sports development in the OECS, especially in Saint Lucia. Grenada is the exception. That island continues to improve in depth and consistency in sports administration and sporting competitions, according to Reds.

In some areas of Saint Lucia, sports seem to be declining rather than improving because the club structures are too loose. There are many teams with no club establishment, no management, no discipline, no fund-raising activities and no mentoring. Many clubs (and associations) are not presenting annual accounts exhibit accountability, or of holding an annual general meeting on time.

Said Reds, “I have made this point before; weak club structure results in weak associations. Club administration should be non-playing members and separate from the team representing the club in competitions. National associations should therefore ask to see copies of club rules, structure and how clubs are run before they are allowed to register for competitions.”

According to Reds, it’s easy for an association to accept fees from teams wishing to participate in sports competitions. Reds concedes that the need for separate club management structures seems to be finally getting home. The Saint Lucia Football Association for example, is now licensing clubs for their respective affiliates to participate in competitions. This move is supported by CFU and FIFA. Will other national associations try and follow this policy?

As far as Reds is concerned, the Saint Lucia National Olympic Committee (NOC) should ensure that national federations and associations are functioning as they should, and in good standing. Making discrete inquiries in the month-to-month activities of these affiliates, without unnecessary interference, is recommended. The Ministry of Youth and Sports must also play a role in ensuring that national sports associations are functioning and carrying out their responsibilities. Reds posed the following rhetorical question: How many associations in Saint Lucia can take advantage of the funds and training offered by the SLU, NOC?

To further emphasize the point of support for national associations and federations Reds informed this writer that some Caribbean countries spend large sums of money bringing in professional coaches to help improve coaching skills in the country. The same applies to the training of officials. Training must be a high priority in sports development.

As far as facilities are concerned Reds believes that most are underutilized, especially in Saint Lucia and the OECS region.

“We must begin to look at facilities differently and use them differently. These were built with good intentions but different administrations continue to use them as they were used in bygone days and not in line with changing needs. These sports facilities are unused between 6am and 3pm daily. There is therefore an opportunity for the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Social Transformation and Ministry of Education with the help of the private sector and the hotels association to bring the unemployed youth to these facilities and into a sporting discipline.”

Reds interviewing Daren Sammy

Reds continued: “In the Castries area the following playing grounds come to mind; La Clery, Vigie, (football and boxing), the Gardens, Foux-a-Chaud, Marchand recreations grounds and Mindoo Philip Park. These should be brought to full use between 6am and 3pm at least twice a week for football, volleyball, boxing, track and field and basket ball. Participants should be provided with drinking water, juice and a snack by the private sector and the hotels working together with government. This must be a separate and distinct programme from the $20.6 million the government recently allotted to sports.” Indeed, Reds believes that this grass roots approach to helping at risk youth is the place for special attention and focus.

“The youth participating in this special sports coaching project should be placed in a separate data base and monitored for progress. We may be surprised at the excellence that will be discovered from this effort,” says Reds. “The media must be the watch dog for sports in Saint Lucia and the OECS.” With the right support of the media and the general public, this kind of programme can be very successful. It is important that regular reports be aired on the electronic media and the youth highlighted for their effort and progress,” Reds added.

Do the media have the talent or ability to support and promote a grass roots sports programme as described by Reds? Reds believes they do.

“Interestingly, most media employ full-time sportscasters who are in a position to ask questions that can help improve sporting standards” says Reds. “The media must do this without conflict of interest. To be more specific, the media can ensure that sponsors get their deserved credits; that sportscasters provide more detailed information on national programmes; that they help investigate why particular associations are not functioning. They should, without fear or favour or bias regularly report on the positives and negatives of various clubs and associations.”

The above are some of the feelings that Reds still holds dear, at age eighty.

When asked an opinion on the new West Indies Cricket Board, Red said that it was too early to comment even though he feels that the immediate past selectors and coaches should not have been dismissed ‘en masse’ so soon.

“I would not have dismissed the selectors or the coaches of West Indies cricket after the team’s favourable performance against England in the Caribbean this year and before a clear succession plan was established. I would have waited until after cricket world cup to revamp the core of the structure.”

On the Caribbean 2019 premier league (CPL) season, Reds thinks there has not been sufficient information to make an informed opinion. “One thing seems certain Darren Sammy seems poised to lead the Saint Lucia Zouks once more.” Reds hopes that ticket prices especially in Saint Lucia will be reasonable and affordable so more people can come and support Sammy and the Zouks.

I could not end this 80th birthday tribute to Joseph ‘Reds’ Pereira before pointing out the comprehensive report at page four of last weekend’s Star Business Week magazine on the Saint Lucia government sports budget for 2019/20. I recommend that it be read by the sporting public and those interested in helping to build better communities through sports.

Cricket World Cup: Carlos Brathwaite —“My skill-set suits bowling very tight in the middle”

Carlos Brathwaite

BRISTOL, England – West Indies allrounder Carlos Brathwaite spoke to CWI Media ahead of the team’s contest against South Africa on Sunday – their first official ICC Cricket World Cup warm-up match.

The two teams will meet at the County Ground, Bristol as they continue preparations for the marquee event.

The tournament will be played in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14. West Indies open their campaign on Friday, May 31 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. First ball is 10:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 a.m. Jamaica Time).

Carlos Brathwaite of the Sunrisers Hyderabad during the practice session before the start of the match ten of the Vivo Indian Premier League 2018 (IPL 2018) between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad held at the Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium in Kolkata on the 14th April 2018.
Photo by: Deepak Malik / IPL/ SPORTZPICS

Brathwaite sees himself as a versatile allrounder and said he was ready to perform whatever role is required. The tall right-hander batted well last week when he made a forthright 60 – off 64 balls with five fours and three sixes – against Australia in an unofficial pre-tournament fixture at the Nursery Ground, adjacent to the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

“Being here with the team preparing for the World Cup means a lot to me. As I always say, putting on the West Indies shirt is always a great feeling and a privilege … to do it on the world stage, with the ten best teams fighting it out for the trophy, is something special,” he stated.

“It’s another challenge and whatever situation presents itself is for me to use my versatility again and to adapt to it. We may need another knock like against Australia or we may need a knock where they only have three overs and I’m supporting one of the batters that is in, so it’s another good challenge for the team and puts us one step closer to the ultimate goal which is winning the tournament.”

Brathwaite added: “When chosen, my skill-set suits bowling very tight in the middle, offering some support at the death and then with the bat picking up the slack. If I need to come in the last three or four overs to give us a boost to the total then fine … or the odd game where I can come in and play a longer knock, so I think it’s about working on all facets of my game so my versatility makes me an asset that can be chosen at any point during the tournament,”

West Indies won the ICC Cricket World Cup on two occasions under the leadership of Clive Lloyd – the first edition in 1975 when they beat Australia and again in 1979 when they beat England.

Toronto will face the Golden State Warriors in the N.B.A. finals after Kawhi Leonard led the Raptors in an upset of the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference finals.CreditCreditDan Hamilton/USA Today Sports, via Reuters

(NEW YORK TIMES) — The Toronto Raptors eliminated the Milwaukee Bucks, 100-94, Saturday night in the sixth game of their Eastern Conference playoff series, bringing the N.B.A. finals to Canada for the first time.

The win — Toronto’s fourth straight in the best-of-seven conference finals — cemented a stunning comeback for a Raptors team used to postseason disappointment. Milwaukee’s loss was just as surprising for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, who had the regular season’s best record (60-22) and opened this series with back-to-back victories.

But the Raptors, behind 36 points from Kawhi Leonard in Game 3 and 25 points from Kyle Lowry in Game 4, dug themselves out of that early hole to even the series at two games apiece.

Game 5, in Milwaukee, could have been the Bucks’ revenge. But their bench (15 points) disappeared just as Toronto’s (35 points) came alive, led by 21 points from Fred VanVleet. The result was a series-deciding game on hostile ground in Toronto, with history on the line.

The Raptors, whose first season in the N.B.A. was 1995-96, had been to the Eastern Conference finals only once before, in 2016. They lost that year to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who went on to win the N.B.A. finals in seven games over the team Toronto will now face: the Golden State Warriors.

Mechaela Judia Hyacinth (vest No. 489)

Azusa Pacific freshman sprinter Mechaela Hyacinth made the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships final in the women’s 100m over the weekend.

The 20-year-old Saint Lucian competed for the Cougars at Texas A&M Kingsville to put the cap on a fine first-year outing.

Coming in with the fifth-fastest time, 11.61 seconds, Hyacinth stopped the clock at that precise time in the final. She ended up in sixth. Rene Medley (Lincoln Missouri) won in 11.20, Dianna Johnson (Adams State) second in 11.29, Eboni Coby (TAMU-Commerce) third in 11.39.

The Leon Hess Comprehensive alumna is already the second-fastest sprinter ever at APU. Her sixth-place finish was also the highest of any athlete for the Cougars at Nationals. She earned three of the 6.5 total points copped by the school’s women’s team.

In the preliminaries, Hyacinth had registered a heavily wind-aided time of 11.63 to go into the final as the sixth-fastest qualifier. Her sixth-place finish makes her one of a handful of APU All-Americans.

West Indies Women celebrate victory over Ireland in 1st T20 International at YMCA Cricket Club, Dublin.

DUBLIN, Ireland — A captain’s knock of 75 from 53 balls from Stafanie Taylor and 4/14 from Afy Fletcher saw the West Indies women secure a comfortable 64-run victory over Ireland women in the first T20 of the three-match Hanley Energy T20 International series, played at the YMCA Cricket Club in Dublin.

The West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first on a sunny but cold day in Dublin but were in trouble early when Hayley Matthews was run out at the non-strikers end for 3.

Opening batter Britney Cooper was joined by Taylor and the pair consolidated nicely, posting a 47-run partnership before Cooper fell for 20. Shemaine Campbelle then joined Taylor and the pair built the West Indies innings sharing in a 75-run partnership.

Taylor showed why she’s one of the most feared batters in the women’s game, as she sliced, cut and drove the ball around the YMCA ground. Campbelle had some brilliant strokes of her own, getting to 20. Both Campbelle and Taylor fell in quick succession of each other.

Ireland’s captain Laura Delany did not bat in their innings as she left the ground to seek medical attention after being hit on her foot while fielding off her own bowling.

Rain robs West Indies men of vital practice

Hamish Amla scored an unbeaten half-century before the rains came.

BRISTOL, England (CMC) — The West Indies’ preparations for the upcoming ICC World Cup were foiled by inclement weather, with their first official warm-up game against South Africa being abandoned here Sunday due to heavy showers.

The Windies were hoping to use the match as practice, with their opening match of the World Cup against Pakistan just five days away.

However, despite the match being restarted after a lengthy delay, the rains came again, forcing the match to end in a no-result.

South Africa had progressed nicely to 60 without loss in the tenth over, when the first set of showers came.

Two more attempts were also made, but both were short-lived as showers forced the players to seek shelter with the Proteas 95 without loss in 12.4 overs.

Openers Hashim Amla, who was unbeaten on 51 and Quinton de Kock, who scored 37 not out, were the batsmen at the crease.

It was tough going for the Windies’ bowlers up to that point, with captain Jason Holder’s five overs for 29 runs being the most economical of the five used.

The West Indies will play their final official warm-up game against New Zealand at Bristol on Tuesday.

BRISTOL, England – West Indies captain Jason Holder spoke to members of the media after Sunday’s match against South Africa was called off due to rain at the County Ground in Bristol.

It was the first official warm-up match for West Indies in this ICC Cricket World Cup and the Proteas reached 95 without loss off 12.4 overs. There were several stoppages for rain beafore a heavy shower around 4 p.m. caused the game to be abandoned.

“It was not ideal today, with the rain, but it’s out of our control. Obviously, it’s a situation where we need to hope we get some cricket in in the next two days against New Zealand. We just came from Ireland and playing the Tri-Nation Series there, so we’ve had a lot of cricket leading up to this. Some of the guys have been playing IPL cricket and everyone was playing cricket leading up to this tournament, so I think we’re all well attuned to the conditions,” Holder said.

West Indies will have their second warm-up match against New Zealand on Tuesday at the same venue as they continue preparations for the marquee event.

This is the 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup and it will be played in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14. West Indies open their campaign on Friday, May 31 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. First ball is 10:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 a.m. Jamaica Time).

West Indies won the Cricket World Cup on two occasions under the leadership of Clive Lloyd – the first edition in 1975 when they beat Australia and again in 1979 when they beat England.

BREAKING NEWS: Nanthan out, Charles back in charge of Windwards Cricket

Julian Charles (left) and Emmanuel Nathan

Dr. Kishore Shallow, vice-president of Cricket West Indies (CWI), and president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, has been installed as president of the Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control (WICBC).

The WICBC met this weekend in Saint Lucia with the election of a president and vice-president top of the agenda.

The 35-year-old Shallow was unchallenged for the presidency as long-time president Emmanuel Nanthan opted against attempting to retain his position. Nanthan last year stepped down as president of the Dominica Cricket Association.

Shallow

Earlier this year, he was beaten by Shallow in a contest for the vice-presidency of CWI. So Shallow now holds office at three levels of regional cricket, whilst Nanthan now holds none.

There was no change, however, in the WICBC vice-presidency. Saint Lucia National Cricket Association (SLNCA) president Julian Charles did not face the anticipated challenge from Grenada Cricket Association president, Dwain Gill.

Charles, who remains a CWI director, now alongside Gill, will face local elections later this year. He, Charles, has been president of the SLNCA since 2009. Charles has also been installed as chairman of the Windward Islands Volcanoes professional franchise.

Following the weekend meeting, alternate CWI directors are Patrick Felix and one-time West Indies T20 player, Miles Bascombe.

Selectors are Steve Mohorn (chairman), Roland Wilkinson, Greg Wilson, and Trevor Shillingford.

WICBC treasurer is Dougal James, and secretary, Kezron Walters.

Choiseul win twice, Prospere hits 100 in SPL T20 weekend action

Gaspard Prospere

In 2018, the Saint Lucia Premier League only had one score over 200. This year, after just one weekend, there have already been two, plus a score of 197.

The opening weekend saw a massive win for Choiseul Craft Masters in the opening match. Defending champions, South Castries Lions, defeated Mon Repos Pioneers, Gros Islet Knights beat Vieux Fort North Raiders, Avatar City Blasters dropped Soufriere Stumpers to their second straight loss, and then Choiseul capped it off with another win.

Within the first four overs, former West Indies opener Johnson Charles lashed 41 off just 16 balls (3×4, 4×6, strike rate of 256.25) to give the champs a perfect start. Grenadian Andre Fletcher picked up where his opening partner left off, ending on 67 from 44 balls. Collinus Calendar mirrored Charles late in the innings, 41 off 16, as the Lions ended on 228-6. Mon Repos were somewhat embarrassingly dismissed for just 118 in response. Keygan Arnold took 3-23, Xavier Gabriel 1-9, and Tonius Simon 2-12.

The Knights were winless last season, but they are off to a flyer in 2019. Gros Islet hit 209-4, West Indies U19 batsman Kimani Melius leading the way with 74 from 46 balls (11×4, 2×6). Vieux Fort North kept pace, largely due to Julian Sylvester’s 99 off 54 balls (4×4, 11×6). But he was one of three victims for teenager Tyrel Chicot, who ended with 3-32 as Gros Islet won by 38 runs.

The Daren Sammmy-led Avatar City Blasters, the 2017 champions, were all out for 197. Sammy’s long-tome friend and teammate Gaspard Prospere made an even 100 off 42 balls (12×4, 7×6), the first in SPL history. Quint Mesmain’s unbeaten late-innings 64 off 33 balls notwithstanding, Stumpers were held to 162/8. Alleyn Prospere took 3-18 as Blasters won by 35 runs. With that, Soufriere, is all but out of the playoffs.

At the other end of the spectrum, Choiseul are marching into the playoffs after two wins. Denzel James hit 99 off 59 balls but the Mabouya Valley Renagades were held to 157/6. Audy Alexander took 3-30 whilst Clem St Rose and Bronté Bess produced some tight bowling.

Choiseul plugged away at the target, sustaining a minor blip in the middle overs when they lost three quick wickets. Fittingly it was Vince Smith who hit the winning runs. His unbeaten knock of 30 was not especially flashy, but he guided his team to the win and put them in pole position to advance.

The touring Scots

(PRESS RELEASE) — The visiting Scots Guards cricket team out of the United Kingdom ended their four-match tour of Saint Lucia in defeat (four-in-four) when Northern Cluster Grass Roots easily overcame them by nine wickets in their 30-overs-per-side encounter at the Gros Islet Playing Field yesterday (Sunday, May 26).

Sanjay Francis and Kimani Melius accounted for the visitors’ first two batsmen, who fell within five overs. It was left-arm spinner, Dari Green’s show from thereon as he ran through the batting line up, dismissing the next six batsmen with figures of 6 for 9 from his three overs.

Only one batsman reached double figures – Cobus Van-Achterberg with 33 that included five fours and a six from 20 balls.

Chasing only 75 for victory, Northern Cluster Grass Roots easily achieved their target for the loss of one wicket. Eighteen-year-old West Indies Female player, Qiana Joseph (26), and Ryan Goodman (21) guided their team home with an unbroken partnership of 60 off 41 deliveries.

Final Scores:
Scots Guards – 74 all out in 12.4 overs.
Northern Cluster Grass Roots – 76 for 1 in 8.5 overs.

Barbados: Panton and Fennell’s fourth Flow King of the Hill

Jamaica’s Jeff Panton and Mike Fennell re-wrote the record books again yesterday (Sunday) with their fourth straight victory in Flow King of the Hill, the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) annual Sol Rally Barbados shakedown.

Having trailed England’s Rob Swann for the first three runs, Panton made the final run count, to win by a margin of 12 hundredths of a second in the Rubis/Sandals Barbados/KIG Ford Focus WRC06.

With the car undergoing a total rebuild, Panton has seen no action since last year, as he explained at the finish: “The times today reflect how much I had to catch back up. All day I really thought Rob had it, right up to the last run when we put on a set of fresh tyres and just went for it. To come out on top is a major confidence boost for next weekend, when we need to be driving more like we did in the last run.”

Rob Swann and Steve McNulty set the early pace, but lost out on the final run

Swann’s determination was evident from the first run in the Elegant Hotels/Blue Sky Luxury/RA Swann Ltd Subaru Impreza WRC S12B – at 2m 17.43s, he was 2secs quicker than Panton, despite giving local fan Amy Speede a passenger ride in co-driver Steve McNulty’s seat. Swann said: “It was my intention to be on full attack and I am sure Amy enjoyed it! With Steve back in the car, the second run was good and I had more to give. Unfortunately, I stalled on the line for run three, which should have been our quick one, so I aborted it. Then on the fourth, I made a couple of small mistakes on the loose part through Golden Grove and at this level you can’t afford any mistakes, however small.”

Still getting used to the huge differences between his former Peugeot 306 Maxi and the Sol/CO Williams Sand & Lime/Automotive Art Impreza S12B, Dane Skeete and Tyler Mayhew were not far adrift, 1.48s behind Panton on their final run. Skeete said: “It felt good to be in the mix with Jeffrey and Rob, especially not having perfect runs and still being a bit untidy. We took no risks and I don’t think that third on the road for Sol Rally Barbados is a bad place to be, so I’m hoping to jump them on Friday.”

Dane Skeete and Tyler Mayhew were happy with their pace, and their third-place finish

England’s Kevin Procter (Procters Coaches/Swift Signs & Shirts Ford Fiesta) was fourth, another 3.6secs behind Skeete, but just one-quarter of a second ahead of Roger Mayers (Chefette/Rubis/Hankook/Sign Depot Toyota WR Starlet), who finished fastest 2wd for the first time since 2014.

He said: “We had a lot of work to do after Shakedown handling-wise and the car feels perhaps better than before. I am confident headed into the weekend, unlike last year where I just had one run at King of the Hill and had a lower road position for the rally. This year, fifth on the road is good and I will set my sights on Mr Procter over the weekend.”

Roger Hill (Esso/Nassco/Pennzoil/MaxMeyer Paints/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC) finished sixth and won Modified 4, having trailed Mark Thompson (Glassesco/NKM Clothing/Bio Beauty/Automotive Art/SLAM 101.1FM Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) in the class until the final run – Thompson ended up ninth overall – with Rhett Watson and Barry Mayers (Chefette/Rubis/Hankook/Sign Depot Ford Fiesta) seventh and eighth.

Roger Mayers and Sean Corbin finished fifth overall and top 2wd

Another lacking seat time in his Chefette/Gliptone/Stihl/Leafy Organics/Gunk/Power King Batteries/Bajan Pure Water/Its Barbados BMW M3, Watson said: “It was a little difficult getting back in, feeling the car out. By the second run, the feeling was there, but the car is very different with the improvements that come with a new shell, so I don’t feel bad to be a second or so off Barry and Roger; I know where some of that time can be found.”

Now running in Group B and therefore not eligible for overall position, Andrew Jones powered the Herr’s/Lucozade/AP Jones Pharmacy/Southern Surf Beach Apartments Ford Escort MkII to 10th fastest, ahead of British visitors Tom Preston and Nigel Worswick, who added donuts to the menu in the later runs once they were sure of a strong result.

Preston, who won the new FIA R5 class in the Hippo Motor Group Skoda Fabia, said: “It has been beautiful here; we had a solid third run and then did some entertaining in the last. During the week we’ll be enjoying what the country has to offer until Thursday, then it’s rally mode.” Worswick was third in M4 in the Ullyetts Machine Shop Service/Rallytech Composites/Worswick Engineering/Rockwell Automation Escort WRC.

Britain’s Tom Preston and Carl Williamson won the new FIA R5 class

The return to Stewart’s Hill attracted huge crowds, who gathered from early to bag the best vantage points, not only along and overlooking the Thickets Straight, but also lining earlier sections of the 4.45kms course, which started at St Catherine’s Church. Trevor Manning (Mitsubishi Lancer Turbo) and then Nigel Reece, co-driven in the MQI-supported BimmaCup car by Daryl Clarke, warmed the crowd up in Zero Car mode ahead of the record-breaking field of 95 cars, which ran in reverse order of seeding, from Clubman up to WRC. All but one of the 95 recorded a time on at least one run.

While the smallest margin of victory had been the overall win, there were other victories claimed in tenths of a second: in SM1, Jeremy Gonsalves (Sign Depot/Guava Tech/Valvoline/Makita/In Gear Auto/John Hardman Engineering Opel Corsa) beat Neil Corbin (Nassco/Jason Jones/Valvoline/Sun General Insurance/Auto Solutions/Emtage Electric Starlet), by just 0.75s after Corbin pulled off on the second run with a severe vibration and did not reappear; in Modified 2, Jamal Brathwaite (Valvoline/Automotive Art/Consumers Guarantee Insurance/Caribbean Auto Glass/TEC Barbados/Stylz Auto Spa/Chicken Pen Racing/JSB Motorsport Honda Civic Type-R) beat Paul Horton of the Turks & Caicos Motoring Club by 0.77s, Horton with his Java Island/Sky Motorsports/H Racing/Arbikie Highland Estate Citroen DS 3 R3 MAX reshelled after an major accident just four weeks before; in Historic 2, impressive first-timer Alex Allingham (HJ Weir Engineering/Weir Laundry Equipment/Wecotec Laundry Equipment Ford Escort MkII) headed consistent class-winner Greg Cozier (Barbados Historic Rally Carnival/Geest Line Escort RS) by 0.96s.

Logan Watson (Leafy Organics/Cargo BGI/Luxe Caribbean Properties/Stihl/It’s Barbados/Sign Depot/Bajan Pure Water BMW M3) won the new M3 class by a margin of 1.6s from Justin Campbell (Republic Bank/Automotive Art/Five Star Fast Track/Hilti/Sign Station/Dream Solutions/Standford Industries/CRT BMW M3) while Edward Corbin (Valvoline/Hilti/Cargo BGI Daihatsu Charmant) headed Scotland’s Kenny Hall (Halltune Garage Ford Puma S1600) for M1 honours by 3.68s. Returning to Sol RB after a few years’ absence, Ian Warren (West Lake/Benthams Farm & Garden/Guava Tech BimmaCup) won Clubman 2, while first-time driver on the island’s premier event, Jason Tull (Jay-T’s/CA Autobody Repairs/Devon Star/Dominus PHD/CST Tyres/Computech Solutions Peugeot 106 Rallye S2) took home the C1 trophy.

A record-making weekend in the Digicel SPLT20 Tournament

(PRESS RELEASE) — Five (5) games played over the weekend seeing Two (2) wins for the Choiseul Craftmasters and single wins for Gros Islet Knights, Avatar City Blasters and the defending Champions South Castries Lions.

In the first encounter on Friday night the Choiseul Craftmasters got off the mark by defeating Soufriere Stumpers by 9 Wickets.

Batting first Soufriere Stumpers managed 140 for 6 in the 20 overs with Keither Prospere top scoring with 35 and a 34 run contribution from Tennesy Hippolyte who retired hurt. Pick of the bowlers for Choiseul Craftmasters was Clem St. Rose with a firing 2 for 16 in his 4 overs.

The Choiseul Craftmasters needing 141 for victory, made light work to get to the total scoring 146/1 which included 124 run partnership between Christian Charlery 43 not out and a man of the match performance from Jason Simon scoring 75 runs. Bowling for Soufriere Stumpers Wayne Prospere was the only bowler to offer any resistance with 1 for 20.

On the Saturday’s double header, the first game saw the defending champions South Castries Lions defeating the Mon Repos Credit Union Mon Repos Pioneers by 110 runs. South Castries Lions posted defendable 228/6 in the 20 overs. Openers Andre Fletcher (67) and Johnson Charles (41) scored a quick fire 53 within 4 overs before Johnson Charles went out bowled by Jamal Lesmond (2-18) who was the pick of the bowlers for Mon Repos Pioneers. The innings closed with a man of the match performance from Cornilus Calender exciting the crowd with power hitting scoring 41 runs of 16 deliveries which included 3 fours and 4 maximums.

Mon Repos Pioneers in reply were only able to amass 118 all out in 16.2 overs. Main contributors with the bat, Kernan Henry 20 and captain Craig Emmanuel 16. The Pick of the bowlers for South Castries Lions was Keygan Arnold 3-23.

In the second match of the night Gros Islet Knights (209/4) batting first got the better of the hosts Vieux Fort North Raiders (171/9) in the encounter winning by 38 runs. In Gros Islet Knights innings, West Indies under 19 player and Captain of the Gros Islet Knights scored a well played 74 of 46 deliveries before being bowled by Al Prince (2-25) captain of the Raiders being the pick of the bowlers.

With Vieux Fort North Raiders turn at the crease. We saw the highest SPLT20 individual best in the runs tally from the heavy hitting opener Julian Sylvester (99)falling 1 short of his century which included 11 maximums to close Saturday’s encounter.

This record was short lived as the next day’s game saw the 2018 finalist Avatar City Blasters (197/10) giving the Club Whispers Soufriere Stumpers (162/8) their second defeat of the season. For Avatar City Blasters a record making performance of 100 (the first century in the tournament’s history) from opening batsman Gaspard Prospere coming in 42 balls. Wayne Prospere (3-18) was again the pick of the bowlers for the Soufriere Stumpers. In soufriere’s attempt at the wicket a late batting performance from Quint Mesmain (64) was not enough to bring Soufriere Stumpers over the line.

Alleyne Prospere was the pick of the bowlers for the Avatar City Blasters with (3-18) in his allotted 4 overs.

In the final matchup the century making SPLT20 record in the previous game was under threat to be broken within the ranks of the Mabouya Valley Renegades (157/6) who didn’t get to muster enough runs in the tally to defend their rivals Choiseul Credit Union Choiseul Craftmasters (161/5). The keenly contested game saw opening batsman Denzel James from the Mabouya Renegades camp scoring 99 one short of his century and possibly breaking the highest individual batting record made earlier in the day. He was out caught on the boundary heaving one straight to long off at the boundary rope. Audy Alexander was the pick of the bowlers for the Choiseul Craftmasters taking 3-30 and was adjudged man of the match.

In Choiseul’s innings at the crease, the Craftmasters had contributions from Jason Simon (36) and Vince Smith (30 not out) to hold their nerves in the end and win the encounter comfortably with 5 wickets to spare.

The action now moves to Gros Islet at the Gros Islet Playing Field on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7pm where in the Tuesday encounter where Avatar City Blaster will come up against the Mabouya Valley Renegades and on Wednesday the match of the defending champions South Castries Lions taking on the Gros Islet Knights. We expect fixtures with even more Nagico Maximums and Lucelec Power Boundaries in the Digicel SPLT2019 tournament powered by The Ministry of Sports. So far the tournament has recorded 92 Sixes and 129 Fours in only 5 Matches.
