Samuel’s century in vain as Australia defeats Windies by 6 wickets

SamuelsEnglandWestIndies36JAMAICA GLEANER – Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell provided overdue contributions in the middle order to help Steven Smith guide Australia into the triangular series final with a six-wicket win over the West Indies at Bridgetown in Barbados last night.

Interim coach Justin Langer had been eager to see how his team responded under the pressure of possible tournament elimination; and Marlon Samuels’ fine hundred (12 fours, two sixes) in partnership with Denesh Ramdin (five fours, three sixes) ensured Australia’s batsmen had little margin for error at Kensington Oval.

However, Smith produced the workmanlike innings of a leader and was able to coax Marsh into one of his best and most complete international innings, albeit on a surface that bore closer resemblance to Australian climes than any other in this series. Maxwell then came in with the game still in the balance – Australia needed 62 off 50 balls – and responded with a starburst of shots that will help his own sense of esteem enormously after a series in which he was dropped for two matches.

Even so, the Australians will still want to improve their fielding and bowling, two areas that were found wanting in the afternoon. On the fastest pitch of the tournament so far, three early wickets to the new ball gave Australia a fine start after Smith sent West Indies in. However, Samuels found a willing ally in Ramdin and the pair put on 192 together, the best fourth wicket stand in all ODIs between the two teams.

After Samuels went on to his first ODI hundred against Australia, late-innings hitting left the visitors to question their choice of bowling first. The selectors again ignored spin and another indifferent fielding display was emphasised by Matthew Wade dropping Samuels on 65.

Digicel_Kickstart-Academy_closing-560x390

PRESS RELEASE – After a week of intense training, gutsy performances and the all-around inspiring team spirit shown by 42 boys at the Digicel Kickstart Academy, the scene was set for a great match to see who would make the cut to secure one of the coveted spots on offer to attend the Manchester City experience.

Last year, six Academy players made the trip to Manchester for the once in a lifetime experience at the Club’s elite training and youth development facility, the City Football Academy as part of the Manchester Experience. The decision to extend this opportunity to 12 players was the direct result of Digicel seeing first-hand the benefits the experience provided the region’s aspiring young talent with, as well as the players’ commitment to taking full advantage of the resources and training expertise being offered to them whilst in the UK.

From the first kick-off to the last whistle, it was clear that the players came to prove to the Manchester City coaches that they were determined to be one of the players selected and could be counted on to demonstrate the same tenacity and dedication as their peers did last October. As a result, all the boys played well – putting into action all the skills they learnt throughout the Clinics and the decision was once again not an easy one for the coaches to make.

City Football Schools Project Manager and Digicel Kickstart Academy Lead Coach, Alan Dixon, said; “All of the boys’ skills have improved greatly, as has their confidence in their football ability. The coaches and I were pleased that they maintained such a great work ethic over the entire week. Seeing them coming into a new environment, meeting new players, learning new techniques and still performing well was impressive.”

Digicel Group Marketing Director, Peter Lloyd, said; “Through the Digicel Kickstart programme, we are giving aspiring young players across the Caribbean an opportunity to improve their game and to achieve their goals – both on and off the field. The boys have been nothing short of stellar at the Digicel Kickstart Academy and we are really happy to be sending not six, but 12 boys to represent their countries and the region at the City Football Academy in Manchester, England.”

The 12 boys selected were:

PRESS RELEASE – The National Equine Welfare and Sporting Association was conceptualized in February of 2012.

However, the amalgamation of enthusiasts and key stake holders, geared to its formation, took slightly in excess of fourteen (14) months.

The Association’s Primary mandate is to culture positive development of the auspicious Equine (horse) industry in our fair Helen, St. Lucia.

The association is now driven and supported by well over 750 St. Lucians, 80 percent of whom are youth, who desire to see the industry develop to a more sustainable condition.

As of today, several clubs now also exist, inclusive of The Jockey Club Chaired by Mr. Jalani Frankiln of La Clery.

The Farriers Club Chaired by Mr. Josh De Fraites, The Trainers Club, chaired by Mr. Tyran Paul of Caye Mange’ and the Endurance Riders Club Chaired by Mr. Kemran Clarke of Roseau.

Several fore-fathers of today’s equestrians relentlessly strived for the acquisition of land space which would provide avid equestrians of different disciplines the ability to nurture and showcase their passion and talents. Today, now elderly, they sulk, exhausted and saturated with disappointment felt from decades of futile efforts.

However, the Association remains hopeful that the Government of St. Lucia can work with them to foster an environment which promotes a reduction in the gap currently existing between local and international standards.

digicel-kickstart-560x390

PRESS RELEASE – St. Lucia has produced ground-breaking results at the Digicel Kickstart Academy, which concluded at Sabina Park in Kingston Jamaica on Thursday June 23rd 2016.

Having been previously selected from the Digicel St Lucia Kickstart clinic at the Sab on April 12th to represent St Lucia at the Kickstart Academy in Jamaica; Jervel Tobierre and Nyrone Winter, are two out of twelve selected from the Academy to move on to attend the Manchester City Football Academy later this year.

At the closing ceremony held on Thursday, immediately after the final whistle was blown at the training sessions, the Manchester City coaches led by Allan Dixon, Project Manager of Manchester City Football School program, announced their top selection, with St. Lucia being the only Eastern Caribbean country to advance.

The boys all received honorary certificates of participation while the top twelve received a special Manchester City package each, which included passport cases, ManCity digital albums, ManCity pins, flash drives and an official congratulatory letter from Manchester City Football Club.

Jervel, from the community of Desruisseaux, expressed his excitement as the grand announcement was made, “I am really thankful for this opportunity to truly live my football dream.

This experience to date has been life changing in every way, from the local pre-clinics in St. Lucia up until now. I thank God for blessing me, I’m thankful for the support of my family, coach and team and of course Digicel in helping me achieve this.”

Nyrone, from the community of La Ressource Vieux Fort added his own elation, stating “I am happy to have another opportunity to represent my country on this level. I’m excited to go to Manchester and get further professional experience. I intend to make the best of this journey and to also share my experience and knowledge with my colleagues both on and off the field and make my family, my community and my country proud.”

Miss Louise Victor, Marketing and Communications Executive at Digicel St. Lucia, described the atmosphere at Sabina Park as the names of the twelve boys were called out, “It was pure joy on these boys’ faces as they all reacted to their names being announced but even more so it was a great joy for Team St. Lucia.

Watching the boys throughout the week and the hard work they put in, we are more than delighted to be able to take them one step closer to their dreams. There was literally blood, sweat and tears throughout this Academy and they are most certainly deserving of this great reward. This partnership with Manchester City is undoubtedly meeting its objectives and we are especially grateful that our St. Lucian boys get to be direct beneficiaries.”

Other countries advancing to Manchester City include El Salvador, Jamaica, Haiti, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

7901762976_31805429e6_bWindward Islands beat Barbados twice and Guyana once to advance to the final of the Under-19 Invitational Girls Twenty20 Tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

In the preliminaries, Windwards were demolished by the home team. Windward Islands were 39 all out in 17.3 overs, and Trinidad and Tobago made the target without loss.

Windwards, captained by Saint Lucia’s Nerissa Crafton, then beat Barbados by eight wickets. Barbados were held to 49/6 in a match reduced to 15 overs. With Saint Lucia’s Qiana Joseph making 12, the Windwards reached 50 for the loss of two wickets in 11.1 overs.

Against Guyana, the islanders won fairly comprehensively. Windwards made 73/9, Qiana with 13 off 23 balls, and captain Nerissa with 18 off 18, including a four and a six. Opening bat Kimone Homer added 14. Saint Lucian opener Allyah Alfred made just one. But Allyah would redeem herself with the ball, big time. She took five wickets for just nine runs in four overs as Guyana were all out for 59. Qiana and Nerissa took one each, as did Homer and Taylor Dickson.

In the semifinal on Friday afternoon, Windwards faced Barbados again. The sub-regional team compiled 64/4, Homer top scoring with 21. A balanced bowling attack, though, wrecked the Barbados batting order, which fell just two runs shy of the target. Allyah took two wickets for 12 runs, Qiana two for 10, and Nerissa effected a run-out. Incredibly, the Windward Islanders gave up 44 extras, Allyah bowling 10 wides.

Regardless, the Windwards ladies are into the final on Saturday, and will be hoping to make a much better fist of things against the host nation.

7900959778_3786fbacd7_bSaint Lucia’s Tarryck Gabriel has been picked by the Windward Islands Volcanoes for the 2016 edition of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League.

Tarryck, a former West Indies Under-19 allrounder, was among the top batsmen in the recent Windward Islands WINLOTT Men’s Tournament. No room, though, was found for the tournament’s joint top scorer, Keddy Lesporis, or joint top wicket taker, Dornan Edward, both Saint Lucians as well.

Out-of-favour former Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine is set to feature for a third team in as many seasons after he will join Tarryck on the Volcanoes. Along with fast bowler Delorn Johnson, batsman Jerlani Robinson, and Grenadian fast bowler, Sherman Lewis, Tarryck and Narsingh were chosen by Volcanoes in the recent WICB Player Draft.

One other Saint Lucian is on the team despite missing the Windward Islands tournament. Aggressive opening batsman Johnson Charles has been on duty with West Indies in the ongoing Tri-Series. The Volcanoes, based in Dominica, are likely to be led once again by allrouner Liam Sebastien.

WINDWARD ISLANDS VOLCANOES – Devon Smith, Tyron Theophile, Liam Sebastien, Andre Fletcher, Johnson Charles, Sunil Ambris, Shane Shillingford, Kenroy Peters, Mervin Mathew, Kyle Mayers, Narsingh Deonarine, Delorn Johnson, Jerlani Robinson, Tarryck Gabriel, Sherman Lewis

Chile wins Copa; Messi says he’s quitting Argentina

AR-160629549TRINIDAD EXPRESS – Lionel Messi put his penalty kick over the crossbar, grabbed his shirt, clenched his teeth and covered his face with both hands.

A few minutes later he walked off the field, a dazed, pained look on his bearded face. The greatest player of his generation, perhaps soccer’s best ever, he was still without a title on Argentina’s national team — one he says may never come.

“The national team is over for me,” he told the Argentine network TyC Sports after Chile beat the Albiceleste on Sunday night for the Copa America title. “It’s been four finals. It’s not meant for me. I tried. It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think it’s over.”

Chile beat Argentina in the final for the second straight year, 4-2 in the shootout following a 0-0 tie that ended an expanded 16-nation Copa in the United States to mark the championship’s 100th anniversary.

Messi, five-time FIFA Player of the Year, winner of four Champions League titles and eight Spanish La Liga crowns with Barcelona, was crushed. Much of his nation had counted on him and the top-ranked Albiceleste to bring home the nation’s first major championship since 1993.

adf581bb-c6c8-4833-be1d-88160467539fPRESS RELEASE – Team Saint Lucia is ready to capture the trophy for the Guinness Street Football Caribbean Championship, as Team Fantastic emerged as the winner of the Saint Lucian Finals.

Vieux Fort played host to the event which got underway a little after 5pm with all sixteen teams coming out in full force. Fantastic, a team who has represented Saint Lucia at past tournaments supplanted themselves as the team to beat from early on. The team pushed through the early rounds and advanced to the semi-final leg where they defeated local and reigning regional champions, Veterans, 1-0.

In the final match, Fantastic expertly demonstrated their superior skill and sheer determination, against ‘Can’t take your Cries’ scoring 1 goal to nil.

Adding to the excitement of the evening, the public came out in full force and repeatedly vocalized their support behind the competing teams.

“The communities came out to support the teams and I was very pleased with the turnout,” said Rohan Lovence, Guinness St Lucia Brand Manager. “All sixteen teams played extremely well but there could be only one winner and Fantastic proved last evening that they are indeed made of more. We move into Regional mode and judging by last evening’s play, Saint Lucia is in a very good position.”

Fantastic was awarded a prize of $6000, a trophy and a spot in the line up of the other regional teams.

The Regional Finals, of the Guinness Street Football Challenge is scheduled to take place this weekend, July 2nd and 3rd on The Ramp at Reduit Beach. Ten country teams, including Saint Lucia all have a shot at winning an all-expense paid trip to Brazil for a football tour.

The action begins at 4pm, and admission is free. There will also be live entertainment by DJ Hersheys and other local acts, performances by the Guinness ladies and Philip Gertsson, Guinness Street Football Challenge Ambassador and Internationally ranked (4th in the world) freestyler.

The public is encouraged once more to come out to support their country.
